"The Story of Buck Knives" by Tom Ables, 1991: Book on Buck

As with the knives.......it seems we often end up with a safe queen and a user.

:D

Now that's some funny stuff Oregon! A little OCD my fellow Buck nut.....handling your new plastic covered Buck book with gloves on...LOL, or is it just cold in your house? ;).

That Ables book is a good read and good reference. I got one off one of the auction site a few years ago, it was as new but the dust cover had a small tear. That was no issue to me as I have read and re-read this book a few times now.....I don't even know were the dust cove is any more:eek: I just wish I remembered to take the book with me when I met Chuck at BP...it could have been signed:(. Maybe next time:rolleyes:.

It is cold in the house but that is not the reason for the glove liners: Fingerprints and extreme care handling the collectibles is becoming my M.O. with mint condition stuff. OCD all right. I also put things into ziplocks. That reminds me I need some really large ones for the big stuff. I think like this, I got this newish thing from the last owner in such good condition because they were careful so I should be cautious if I want this time traveling artifact to make it to the next caretaker in pristine condition, collector's mantra I suppose.

There is a movie, "Everything is Illuminated," that has a collector as the central character. He travels from the USA to the Soviet neck of the woods in search of his ancestry. On site he runs into a collection of staggering dimensions. One of my favorites.

I'll probably stumble into a user Buck book at one of the shows one of these days. Something to search for, one with margin notes penciled by a gifted collector hopefully!

I'm hoping my new one comes today. I hope it turns out to be good like Oregon's.

My current copy is in excellent condition and signed in Feb. 2000 by Chuck to "Joseph's Dad Joe," whoever that is.

I posted the info in this forum about a year ago just in case the book had been sold by mistake and some relative wanted it.

No responses.......I even sent an e-mail to Buck in case somebody there knew who it was.

No responses.

So, it remains my user book.

It's really surprising how often I open it up with a question and find an answer.

I got my book off the bay new for $20... I need one I can read and look at now... So I'm looking for a good used one too...

They used to be easy to find. Not as many around now and prices are up accordingly.

Prices will probably continue to go up until a new edition comes out or some small publisher does a little run of new ones.

Right now I'm thinking neither possibility is likely because of the relatively small number of Buck collectors.

So prices will probably continue to go up slowly.

There was a new one available on Amazon yesterday for $55 and I see it's gone.

Got mine......it's just like Oregon's except mine shows a few storage marks--slightly bumped corners and a few little tears in the shrink wrap......not really qualifying as "New" condition, but good enough for me.

So, I took off the plastic wrap and gave it a place of honor on the shelf. I'll let it sit and use the other one. I hate seeing books suffocate in plastic. It's breathing now. :)

Glad I saw it and thanks to Oregon or whoever it was that tipped us off on this opportunity. Good price.

I'm happy that you got yours. So then it sounds as if you would recco the vendor.

Suffocating in the shrink wrap... I'm sure you are right. I won't argue with you about that. How could the ink dry properly otherwise.

Question: Would it be an insult to the copyright using a new sequential page of the book as a photographic background on the forum? I suppose that if I have this question I already know the answer.

Yeah, the vendor did ok. The book wasn't badly banged up. A couple corner bumps. It's good to keep in mind that books in shrink wrap can be pretty beat up and still be promoted as being in shrink wrap, though.

I'm glad to have it at that price. I could sell it at a profit without the shrink wrap, but I want to keep it.

I don't think using a page as a background would be a problem. This is the Buck forum, after all.

:)

Alright....you all get me thinking too much. I had a perfectly good user copy of the book. (the one on top) I was completely happy with it. Then I read this thread and felt I needed a new one with shrink wrap. (the one on bottom)
