The Street Cane, Excellent Weapon and some great Instructional Materials

In the constant Threads/Topics over what knife is legal, and the techniques that drive them...there has been a maddening debate.

The Street Cane or Walking Stick will put alot of these concerns to rest.

I'm a big fan of CaneMasters Canes, I don't much care for the methodology that some Karateka put behind the Cane, but that is O.K. too. I just don't like rigidity and uniformity...

I cannot wait till I can afford Kelly Worden's upcoming (maybe already released) Cane/Walking Stick Project and Jim Keating's two Comtech Tapes on the Cane.

I believe Jerry VanCook will be on the Worden Tape(s) as well! Good stuff from good people.

Here is a link to Ashley Bass' website, there is an file on Pekiti-Tirsia's Cane strikes with Tuhon William McGrath.

AND...the following really is a must see...

Kali Ilustrisimo Espada y Daga. Not only is the Espada y Daga great, direct and to the point (pun fully intended) but the Tulisan Knife Fighting is as well.

There is a great section on the Walking Stick as well. A weapon I adore in concept, legality and effectiveness.

This tape is Produced by Unique Publications and features Senior Instructors Christopher Ricketts and Rey Galang. Well worth the money! Great addition to the Library.

Don,

I'm with ya on the CaneMasters canes. They aren't cheap, but they are definitely the nicest I've ever owned.
As far as defensive application, you just need a good imagination and a little training to really make the most of any cane.

Thanks for the links.

Steve

I agree that a cane is a great self-defence tool, but wont i look a little stupid, if a young man walks around with it?

Don't you remember that your back and legs got hurt in a car accident, and that your legs occasionally give you trouble. You carry the cane just in case the "injury" flares up.

Hey JRF, I can say that the Tulisan work on the video is pretty short but quite representative of stuff that we cover in classes at the Bakbakan (North America) Gym in Lodi, NJ...the REAL "applied art" comes out through repeated, and furious sparring sessions/scenario training, etc.

That's the way that Tatang Illustrisimo really taught his stuff--through hard contact and constant sparring...kinda like what Kuntawman posted some time ago, I think, about how FMAs are transmitted in the PI, as opposed to here...it's a different methodology from what you might have seen with others, the Bakbakan method doesn't really begin with a 12-strike Abecedario, and sets of drills from the Abecedario...'course, that's how I understand it, and I'm not an instructor, just a lowly clasroom grunt at best.

As for "is it practical?"--well, I trust my life to the Bakbakan way, so...you could say I'm biased...I'd say that Tatang Illustrisimo's methods (transmitted through Guro Rey) are totally righteous, and if nothing else, are an interesting addition to your arsenal, and a peek into how stuff is done over at the Gym, both in Lodi, and in Manila (Makati).

If you ever saw Punong Guro Sulite's book on Balisong fighting, the knife techniques are basically (well, to my eyes at least) Tulisan methods...don't know if that means anything to you.

I hope that helps, take care and be well, okay?

I have been thinking about purchasing a Cane Masters cane for some time, and I am glad to hear that they are as good as their reputation suggests. Has anyone seen any of the Cane Masters training videos? I am a JKD practitioner, and am more than a bit worried that these videos will feature a good deal of classicized technique, katas, etc. instead of more street-applicable techniques. If someone has seen these videos and knows they are high quality, please let me know. I am glad to hear that Keating and Worden are putting out tapes on the cane -- one never has to worry whether or not their techniques will be street applicable.

Take care and train hard,
Fedaykin

Don,

I've got the Comtech X-cane tapes 1 & 2. Good for beginners, IMO. Good solid instruction with lots of room for improvisation by learned practitioners. I think tape 3 will be the more dynamic (fun) stuff. I'll let you know. Or if you want to check these out I'll send 'em to ya.

I think I'm going to order the entire Livesay/JVC tape/cane set next week. I'll post a review afterwards if you like.

L8r,

Steve

Don, I was sitting in Datu's living room a few weeks ago and we watched the tape.

It's great. His tape starts with rompida, I believe, and goes from there. Fulcrum strikes and loads, defense against grabs, takedowns and a lot of other stuff, peppered as always with Datu's inimitable perspective. Also some insight into the 10-strike system.

Ellingsen's tape is good, it's the first tape and covers some basics. I think that it would definitely help even the non-martial artist use their cane in a pinch.

VanCook's tape, the last, deals with "lethal tactics". I felt the material to be useful and drew a few things from it, but it was pretty darn short. I could have gone for more stuff from Jerry.

Sorry this "review" isn't more detailed, but I give it my absolute recommendation.

I see a lot of posts from young healthy fellows who are worried they might be accused of going armed if they were to start walking around with a cane -- but I've never seen a single post from anyone who's been hassled. I walked around with a knob-end stick for a while when I was in my twenties, and only occasionally needed to lean on it at all (when I did need it I needed it, though) and nobody ever hassled me or accused me of carrying a weapon. I think it's a completely groundless worry -- there are a lot of strong young muscular people who have a trick knee or something that only occasionally acts up, and have to have a cane at all times because they don't know when it'll act up. It was seldom that anyone asked me why the stick, and only people who knew me ... people just don't ask. Probably because they don't want to hear a long boring story about your back trouble or whatever it is ... they assume there's a medical reason for it and they assume the details would only bore them.

I totally agree. About ten years ago (I think I was young then) I visited my brother while he had an assignment in D.C. I took a hickory hog cane (talk about conspicuous!) everywhere I went for two weeks but nary a comment or even an odd look. Smithsonian, the metro, Capital even the FBI building. No problems! Gave me a warm fuzzy feeling the whole time I was there. (I guess I had an Al Mar eagle in my pocket too.) I even saved a lady from a big old hamshire boar from Arkansas

Hola guys I just checked out the canemasters website. I'm all for supporting entrepaneurs, but if anyone is on a budget you can get a hog cane for about $12 at a feed store. I know that for some locating a feed store that sells hog canes might be on the order of a Holy Quest. OK I'm a big hick, I use mine to herd my goats with!

Anyway the crook will definintely fit around your neck and you couldn't break one if you tried. Steam it if you want it bigger. Sand it, stain it mine has a nice patina from goat urine. Hey I heard that.....!

Correction! I just saw a post from Ken Cox -- he had his cane confiscated! By a British airline ... see http://www.knifeforums.com/ubb/Forum29/HTML/000079.html

What's the point of ranting ... you already know how I feel; you all feel the same way yourselves. I also just read that despite expected bad weather, no umbrellas will be allowed at the inauguration of Emperor W. Canes and umbrellas are illegal weapons ... the day of the yuga is at hand ... just one prediction before I log off: I predict the next weapon to be outlawed will be shoes. Remember I said it first....

Ooops -- I just reread Ken's post and now I see it was in 1979 that the British airline confiscated his cane. I guess I was too excited to notice that on first reading. Sorry. The banning of umbrellas is current events, though, so that doesn't mean the day of the yuga isn't at hand ... I stand by my prediction that shoes will be banned next ... maybe not all shoes at first ... maybe they'll ban only steel-toed "assault shoes" at first.

Hi Don and all. I am (like you) one of the
primary non-commercial promoters of the cane!

My mailing list "PerfectWeapon" on www.egroups.com is devoted to the discussion of the walking cane and legal knives.

Yesterday, I started a new Forum called,
"Cane Knife Stick". You don't need to be a
member to read or post. Here it is:

http://pub48.ezboard.com/bcaneknifestick

I stayed up all night and posted detailed reviews of about a dozen instructional cane video tapes. In the near future, I will be posting reviews of Newt Livesay's cane series which features Jeri VanCook and the others.

I believe that we all need to reconsider modern weapons for modern times. "What good is a weapon if you can't take it with you?"

"Legal Knives?"</font>

Hi Don, I see your "point". :-)

The question of legal knives varies widely by geographical location... In some places there is no such thing as a legal knife!

I live in California. While the gun laws suck, the knife laws are pretty good. There is no blade-length limit on a concealed folder. Conceivably, we could carry a folding machete. I carry a 12" REKAT Sifu. This knife would be illegal in many other areas.

I believe in, and promote the concept of using legal weapons. The primary focus of the PerfectWeapon forum is on the cane. The cane is legal everywhere.
