The Struggle of being a "New Guy"

I've always liked knives and owned a fair share of shitty ones. For the longest I was that guy who bought those $15 head shop knives and thought they were so "cool". About a year ago my dad bought me a Gerber Torch II Tanto as gift. This to me after owning all those junky want to be knives was awesome. I used the heck out of that thing until just recently I decided it was time to get something new. I stopped in to my local scheels and the guy working there talked me into a CRKT Shenanigan for $20 on sale. After using it for a few days I was amazed at the quality of the knife for the price so I just had to research CRKT. This led me to BF and opened up a whole new world to me. I have a spyderco resilience in the mail that should be here tomorrow and I'm already wanting to order another knife. When you guys were new did you have a sudden urge to buy tons of knives? How did you control yourself? There's just so many nice blades and different options out there its tough not to spend every dime I have at once.

Um, the people around here aren't the best to ask about controlling yourself haha. Welcome to the forums by the way. :)

Been there man. It took me a while to figure out what I liked best in a knife. My problem is I like to keep pretty much everything even if I rarely use it. There are quite a few good quality knives at a good price like your Resilience out there. Check out Kershaw's offerings. And if you get addicted to knives in the $50-$150 range look out. Enjoy he ride and welcome to the forums.

it's a slippery slope man... You'll go from 20 to 50 then 80. From 80 you'll jump to 100+ then 200+ then customs and midtechs...

You're in for quite the ride

I've literally got a list of knives I'm going to buy next. I'm trying to get one of all the major brands. Mostly they're more popular budget ones to see what i like. My list is as follows in no order
Kershaw blur S30V
Buck Vantage pro
Ontario Utilitac II
ZT 0350
Benchmade 551 Griptillian
Cold steel ak47
kershaw skyline

I definitely wanted to get my hands on as many knives as I could afford in the beginning. Part of me still does. I was buying or trading for a new knife every week It seemed. Trying out over a dozen different types and brands of knives helped me to learn what I really liked and wanted in a knife. Now instead of buying say four $100 knives, id rather buy one $400 knife that will satisfy me for much longer and I enjoy it more. I guess bills and the desire for pricier knives were what helped me control it.

The journey is really fun. When you realize how much there is to learn and your tastes change as you absorb more knowledge, you just appreciate knives so much more.

To control my binge buying I started buying customs. The theory was that buying something truly special would curb my desire for lesser knives. All it did was make me want more customs. Now Im back to collecting anything with a blade. So really I dont think there is any hope. The deeper your collecting gets the deeper your desire for nicer examples.

Really? I tried that once but stopped when I got to the three digit range ... just too depressing imho ;)

And then there are those evil "EDC" and "Just pics of knives" threads in all the forums, which add to the list on a daily basis :(

Thank goodness for this forum. I have learned a lot from it. There are tons of knives I want but know I can't afford. I have found that the research on knives can be rewarding in its own right. I am on here everyday browsing. I kinda like to handle a knife before purchasing. Going to a gun and knife show this weekend so I hope I can handle some of the Bladetech knives. No one sells them locally and that's why I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. Have also bought some lightly used spydies on eBay for cheap. One dealer I found sold me a used endura that arrived shaving sharp with no appearance of use except for some wear on the clip. He always lists his items with them against an American flag background so you can look for him. He's out of Missouri by the way. Just use good judgement and buy what you like and can afford. I know it's hard not to purchase every knife you want. But where would the fun in that be? Use this forum, there are lots of knowledgeable people on here. And welcome to the forum.

Just apply a little common sense to your purchases and you'll be fine. You will probably notice if you continue an interest in knives and continue visiting BF, the price will steadily increase until you sort of plateau. The important thing is to have fun.

Oh yea I've definitely learned a lot this past week from hours of browsing on this forum and I was kinda shy at first to post but I've noticed a great amount of hospitality in the community.

Three digit range in quantity of knives or price?

Quantity of knives for sure ... with about 70% with prices in the three digit range (€ not $) ... and about 5% in the four digit range (which I most probably will never get, but damn those are nice ;))
I succeeded in a minimum of self control, my most expensive knife is about € 180 (~ $ 250) so far (custom Neck Knife from a German maker)...

I guess I am more on the "totally crazy" side of Knife Guys, right? ;)

If knives. Holy Shit am I in for a ride lol

And it is not going to end soon, good Luck! :D

When I first started looking here I bought a knife every few weeks. What mostly quelled it was getting off this site. I still looked at knives online, but not seeing other people showing pics of their new knives made it easier for me to purchase. I also noticed recently that my knife obsession is directly related to my fishing obsession. When fishing season is in, my knife hobby takes a back seat. When winter rolls around I start getting the itch again.

When I made a transition from a knife hobby to a gun hobby, I stuck with the mantra "Buy quality; cry once". The benefits of going this route are that 1) the pride of ownership is guaranteed to be there, 2) you may look at items of lesser quality and say "why would I buy that when I already have this?", and 3) it will have good resale value if you do decide to part with it.

If you spend a little more upfront, it may save you much more in the long run. This is a lesson I learned during the days of my knife hobby when I did the exact opposite and ended up spending a lot more than I expected.

Good luck, buy an Opinel, and hope to heavens that you don't get into the "hard-use" craze.
