Same old 110 as every other day.

Roger, thanks for another Sunday Picture Show...and the always informative introduction to the days show. Thanks to all who post photos and comment. Makes each Sunday's show special.
After posting the thread https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/lets-see-those-900-series-bowies.1817527/ searching and re-searching Buck bowies I bought this 903. Not exactly the 'one' but it will quell the urge and give me more time to expand the search...

Nice choice!
I was wondering what you came up with.
I like those big handled knives.

Finally came across the wood species on this Joe H Kalinga.

The heartwood has a light orange brown colour, with an irregular pattern of black stripes, which makes it very decorative. After exposure Muiracatiara darkens quickly to orange or dark red brown. The sapwood is clearly demarcated. The grain is straight or interlocked and the texture is fine. Density at 12 % moisture content: 0.80 g/cm3.

Machining goes well, despite the high density. The surface gets very smooth with a greasy touch. The results with gluing and finishing are good. Pre-drilling is recommended. The blunting effect is fairly high; peeling is not recommended or without interest and slicing is reported to be good. Drying goes relatively easy, but must be done with care to avoid checking.

Muiracatiara is very durable to fungi and is durable to dry wood borers; sapwood demarcated (risk limited to sapwood).

Muiracatiara can be used for several applications such as:

  • Interior: e.g. veneer, panelling, flooring, tool handles, high class furniture, music instruments, sculpture, joinery, wood ware, sliced veneer
  • Exterior: e.g. panelling, boardwalks, constructions, heavy carpentry, joinery
Muiracatiara is often used because of the decorative appearance, but also due to the typical hardwood properties (durable and hard)
