Hello and welcome to the Sunday Picture Show. Share your Buck knives with others by posting pictures of them here. New or old, plain or custom, user or safe queen, one or a collection, we love to see them all. This weekly tradition was started in 2010 by ItsTooEarly (Armand Hernandez) and Oregon (Steve Dunn). Help keep the tradition alive. Feel free to click that 'LIKE' but lets not let it replace discussing and complimenting each others knives. DeSotoSky (Roger Yost)

On This Day. October 13th, 1792 The cornerstone for the White House was laid.

**Design of the Capitol and White House was by competition with 9 proposals submitted.
**Irish-American architect James Hoban's design was selected. He supervised the construction of both the U.S. Capitol and the White House.
**George Washington was the only President (1789-1797) who did not live in the White House although he did select the design and location.
**Construction lasted 8 years, 1792-1800, just in time for John Adams (1797-1801) to occupy it near the end of his term.
**We were a nation of immigrants and slaves. The main residence and foundations of the house were built largely by both free and slave African laborers. Much of the other work on the house was done by immigrants, many of whom had not yet obtained citizenship.

**The White House and other publiic buildings were burnt in 1814 by the British. I think we had it coming but that is another story.

**The White House was always white, its stonework covered with a lime based whitewash. Folklore attributing the white color to restoration after it was burnt by the British is just 'hogwash'.
**Variously referred to as the Presidents House or Executive Mansion, the earliest nickname reference 'White House' can be traced to a 1812 message by Congressman Abijah Bigelow concerning the looming war. Not officially named the White House until a 1901 executive Order by Theodore Roosevelt
**James Buchanan (15th 1857-1861) was the only bachelor to occupy the White House. (he never married).
**Originally, the second floor was used for both offices and presidential residence. Theodore Roosevelt (1901 -1909) had 6 children. Between need for additional space and growing staff the first West Wing was added in 1902. It has gone thru many changes since. Major renovations in 1909, after a 1929 fire, and even more renovations by Franklin Roosevelt in 1933.
**In 1948 it was found the White House was close to structural failure. The interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame was constructed inside the walls. The 2 basements were constructed and included mechanical upgrades such as air conditiioning. On the exterior, the Truman Balcony was added. Once the structural work was completed, the interior rooms were rebuilt inside the walls. Truman (33rd '45-'53) lived accross thee street at Blair House from '48-'51.
**The East Wing as it exists today was added to the White House in 1942 primarily to cover the construction of an underground bunker. Serves as the primary public entrance to the White House. Offices of the First Lady are on the 2nd floor.
**The Presidential Emergency Operations Center, PEOC (PEE-ock) is a bunker underneath the East Wing of the White House and is always staffed. It is supposedly hardened to withstand a nuclear attack but detailed information about the bunker is secret. Not to be confused with the Situation Room which is in the basement of the West Wing.
**In Popular Culture. Trump went to the bunker for a short time during the DC riots relating to George Floyd. Always image conscious and concerned it made it look like he was hiding. Trump was upset that information was leaked to the press and said the person responsible should be executed for treason.
**White House by the numbers, 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, 3 elevators, and 2 basements.

Wiki read about the White House here...

Buck issued a gold etched model 531 Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the White House. 1792-1992
It was an issue of 500 and a knife I do not have. Image swiped from internet. Anyone have a better image?

July 16, 2019 CJ Buck in the East Room of the White House

July 2019 BOTM. (0105BLSBOTM) Issued the same month CJ Buck visited the White House.
IMO the best BOTM ever. 1 of 150. The 13 star Circular Flag is commonly called the Betsy Ross Flag appeared in the early 1790's. No one fact checked Nike and Kaepernick as this flag did not exist during the Revolutionary War (1776-1783).

it's an interesting big traditional knife. has stainless blades, but carbon back springs....

ya can see how badly rusted this ones springs were, pits and all. i removed as much rust as i could and used vinegar to dissolve most of it, years ago, and patina the springs....still functional though.....

Thank you Roger for the History lesson and the Sunday Picture Show. Our congressman Gerald Ford arranged for our family to take a tour of the White House in 1955. It has changed quite a bit since then. I got out the Halloween Buck early this year.IMG_6241.jpeg

Happy SPS

The first couple of posts got me curious about when electricity was added to the White House. Internet search ensued...
From https://www.whitehousehistory.org/q...-was-electricity-installed-in-the-white-house

"Electricity was first installed at the White House in 1891 during President Benjamin Harrison’s administration as part of a project for wiring the State, War, and Navy Building next door, today’s Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The Edison Company installed a generator for both buildings, with wires strung across the lawn and into the White House. Wires were buried in plaster, with round switches installed in each room for turning the current on and off."

Hi All Happy SPS,

Thank you Roger for hosting these shows each week. Also, thank you to each of you who take the time to post photos or add to the conversations.

Sorry no Whitehouse knives. However, I do have an old president or two.
