The Superfluous Knife Features Thread

I know some find flippers to be extraneous, but I find them to be quite useful as my fingers get more stiff with age...or maybe it's the detentes on my non-flippers are getting stiffer.

If you ever flip a vehicle you will be glad for that glass breaker and seat belt cutter. Been there it was unpleasant.

I have no doubt that you are correct. My Zaan had a glass-breaker, but my present EDC does not.
I do NOT do skulls. I won't have a knife (had one) with a rotating blade-locking button. I have found that some lanyards are helpful. A SAK does ride in my watch-pocket MOST days, so that takes care of some gimmickry if I need tweezers et al. A blade that is thicker than about 0.140" is not useful to me, and means it won't slice worth a darn. Backspacers make me wonder WHY...
Just a simple 3.3" blade of good steel wrapped in two slabs of titanium...with perhaps a glass-breaker stud on the blade spine or grip.

Sonny,

What do you mean by rotating blade locking button? Like a two in one blade that can be rotated out? Thanks.

No, Red, I mean on the DPX Hest 2.0 that I bought several yrs ago. It had a short thick pry-bar blade on it besides. I truly did NOT like that knife whatsoever. Buying it was a beginner's mistake. And, yes, there are some folks that love that model and that is just super. There is something for everybody.

- From the Benchmade 2011 consumer catalog:

"Perhaps our most exciting news is the modification of our coating for BK and SBK blades. We are pleased to announce that we have entered into an exclusive agreement with NIC Industries to use their Cerakote™ Gen II coating. This technology is designed to provide a visual, near-infrared and thermal signature management capability. At the same time, this new coating resists corrosion, enhancing the durability of the blade."

Assuming the average consumer doesn't moonlight as a member of SEAL Team Six, I think we can add "night-vision resistance" to the list of superfluous features.

Don't care for recurves, tanto blades, skull beads(or any other beads on a lanyard), coated blades, jimping anywhere other than for thumb(and don't really need it there), thumb ramps, assisted opening, bright colors, serrations, overly thick blades, funky locking mechanisms, funky designs in general, glass breakers on a knife, shiny or black pocket clips, handle with to much drop, waved opening, and if I thought longer I'm sure I could think of more.

Thanks Sonny. Heard some good things about the Hest from its users, and it looks interesting. Far too rich for my blood.

Agree with some of what's been said for sure (I do like flippers though)--but haven't seen waved opening mentioned. Not something I'm interested in for my carry.

I have one specifically because of that now. When I rolled I just had a pocket knife.

I think that's a good investment. As you've proven, those features on a knife can be useful. It's just that I'm highly unlikely to be carrying a knife with those features if I experience a roll over.

I have actually grown fond of the wave mechanism. After carrying my Mini Commander and waved Endura and switching back to my regular Endura I miss the wave. I can definitely understand that it's not for everyone though lol.

Can't believe I forgot about the Wave !
Going to edit now.

Upper guards are an annoyance of mine for most knives. If its a fighting knife, I get it, but for anything else, please leave them off. I'll also agree with the skull crusher/glass breaker on most knives.

And personally, huge choils. I like sharpening notches, but can't stand big huge "finger" choils (and yes, I know many people love them. I respect that, just haven't found that to be true for me).

We get all kinds of coatings on our blades, but some say that a coated blade will not cut as well. I don't know if there is one simple answer; certainly rusting can be a concern...
However, I really DO LOVE a stonewashed blade...which tends to hide/camoflage any small scratches or "imperfections." Something I've seen only recently is a folder that has a stonewashed blade...as WELL AS the titanium scales. Now, THAT is a good idea, which means that all of our knives that show up those spider-trails by just looking at a grip is a BAD idea...IMO.

I'm starting to get into knives with stainless steel handles... shiny from tip to tip.

Personally i have never noticed any problems with cutting with any coatings. If it takes any extra force at all, it seems to be an infinitesimally small amount.

Wow, what's with the recurve hate? I like a recurve blade, they look nice and cut really well.

I totally agree. I think it's cause they can't sharpen them lol just a joke. I also love my wave feature.

Absolutely hate tanto and will never again own one.

I thought the wave was superfluous until I bought a Spyderco P'kal. It's cool, it's useful and it's essential on the P'kal.
