The Surefire Pen: 2 Year Review

Thanks for the review! I've busted a couple of Lamy pens over the last few months and I realize that I need something stronger. i'm going to check out the surefire line.
 
Even though this is a zombie thread, thanks for the review. I also highly recommend checking out Mark's "Good Kit" website.

Mark, if you see this, can you tell where you got the replacement glass breaker and how you did the replacement?

I can't say for sure, but I'd wager models like the Benchmade tactical pen (icepick shaped) will raise some eyebrows and probably be confiscated, where as models like this and possibly even the Embassy are more likely to be OK'd. The Embassy is, after all, rounded off on both ends iirc. If you can carry a sub 7" screwdriver or wrench on the plane:

...You'd think most "tactical" pens would be OK, no matter how "menacing" they might look.


Still, I'd carry a self-addressed envelope just in case.

Thanks for checking out Good Kit man, I've been distracted lately writing a book, but I plan on a bunch more reviews in the future.

So, the glassbreaker mod began as a discussion I posted on USN forum, trying to figure out how to remove the standard 303 stainless BB and sub it with a Silione Nitride ceramic BB. One option was to hold the glass breaker head upside down with a pair of pliers and heat it red hot, so that the expanding steel would cause the BB to fall out. Another option was to simply drill it out from the bottom with a 1/8" drill bit.

I lucked out, as one of the USN bro's over there works for SF, and he sent me a head that had yet to have the BB installed, so all I had to do was press the BB in with a vice and I was GTG.

So, what you need is a 3/16" Silicone Nitride BB, which are available in packets of 10 online, and I would say a drill press to drill out the stainless BB from below.

i have the Pen for several time too. I trade it, the front Grip was for me to slippery. I think i buy me the next Surefire Pen.

I've had mine for a few months now. I would have to agree that the grip does lack a bit of traction (perhaps some knurling would be nice) but I really enjoy the pen. The fact that it will take almost any refill cartridge is a huge plus in my books!
 
THs review made me get an SF pen awhile back, then I ended up with an SFP-2 and now i rotate them both. Thanks for the great article.
