The SwissTank MKIV

I still keep a orange Millie in my bag, for whenever I go to the mountains. Such a great knife. My favorite fillet knife for prepping walleye while out night fishing.
Yeah, Millie + SAK is such a powerful combo. Orange is nice, too ;)

Back on topic: I seem to enjoy the convenience of pocket clips even on SAKs so that would make the Huntsman my max size carry that would still feel good clipped in pocket. This does not prevent me from having my SwissChamp handy near the mouse pad as I type this :)

Excellent write up and nice to see you around. I’m currently trying to reduce/simplify my collection and I have always had a fondness for SAKs. Do you carry the SwissChamp loose in your pocket? How bulky is it?

I find it to be too bulky for loose pocket carry. So I generally carry it in the watch/change/fifth pocket of my jeans. During the summer months, I dangle it into the front pocket of my shorts, with the lanyard hanging out. Because it can’t turn horizontally in your pocket, like smaller SAKs, it seems to stay in place remarkably well.

Buzzbait Buzzbait As someone who got heavily into SAKs in the last year, and positively love the SwissChamp (I'm carrying my favorite today, in fact), I always enjoy your posts on the way you've thought about yours, and the adventures it helps you with. Always great to read your posts, friend. And the pictures are great as well!!

You and me both. I reckon Victorinox should make him an offical swiss champ ambassador, and use his posts above as sales literature

Too thick for my pockets. I like the Champ, but there are a lot of tools I have no need for. It resides in my kitchen "junk" drawer with other assorted tools. Once in a while, I'll use it around the house.

Great write up!

Convincingly so... I had never considered those big saks to be anything but good stocking stuffers.. just thought a proper swiss multitool would be more appopriate.

Are those little pliers any good?

Reading one of Buzzbait's pieces from 10+ years ago was what originally got me into the Spyderco Military;
Now, 25 Millies later, I'll not walk into the same trap all over again :) and vow to stick to my Huntsman(s)
*opens new tab to check out Champs*
Necro'ing this half a year later (and self-quoting myself 😋 ) to say that I've finally caved in, got a discounted Swiss Champ this year's black Friday, slapped some Micarta scales on, and giving the concept a try.

It's not the only knife I will carry (I typically EDC an OTF so it would kinda make sense I pair it with the lightest OTF I own) but I'll try to use the Swiss Champ for every task I can think of.

The whole 'carry it in jeans' 5th pocket' sounded dubious at first, but so far I find it somewhat manageable (less comfy when driving, but pretty much unnoticeable when simply strutting around). I've added a GITD firesteel but not the helix tinder (I dislike how it starts to unravel from simple carry) and instead fitted a bunch of firecord (only the inner strand) under the inline Phillips.
