The thrill of AO has worn off for me

Thrill of carrying an assisted opener has worn off for me. The only two I have left are a SOG Flash II I got in a trade Saturday, and a BM Apparition. Luckily, the Optimiser can be removed to turn it into a regular linerlock. It's not like I'm buying an auto either. Anybody else left the party?

Just for the record, this is not a dig on AO's, just my personal preference.

I've got Kershaw Spec/speed Bump lately. Engaging/disengaging the safecatch is definitely time-consuming, but knife itself is so beautiful!
I'm still fascinated with it, wait until I play enough…

Not yet. I have two Kershaws (Scallion and Whirlwind) and a Camillus Blaze, and all three serve me nicely. Of course, my wrists get achy from time to time, so the thumbstud-flick opening method is not always an option, and one-handed opening is a must. Almost went for an auto, but decided it was just my inner 12 year old that wanted to be James Dean.

AO's are only cool because they are fun to play with.

Personally I have come to think that an AXIS or compression locks are even more fun to play with though, because you can flip the blades both open and closed. Can't do that with an AO that I know of. Hence the 710 and the Paramil in my pockets.

You know, I'd really like to try the Offset, and even the ET, but they're too close to automatics for me. Its not settled yet whether or not these will be considered automatics where I live or not, and its just not worth the hassle. Especially with the ET, which is sad really as it IS a fascinating knife.

I had a Dominator for a year or so and eventually felt the same way. I ended up giving it to my son.

Well really, just because to can't EDC a knife is no reason not to get it if you really like the design. I (almost ;) ) never carry an automatic because they are illegal here, but I still have a few of them that I use around home or maybe take camping once in a while.

Really, who among us doesn't have a knife (or 10) that they almost never carry?

I'm keeping my leek "forever" but i doubt i'll ever pick up another ao. what bothers me is sooner or later the spring will break. later, ahgar

It's interesting that you mentioned this, because there are a couple of Kershaw knives that I like, but haven't purchased because they're A/O. I wish that Kershaw would offer A/O as an option or a removable feature. :(

Taking a Leek apart and removing the spring is really very easy to do.

Just make sure the knife is open when you take the handles apart.

i am thinking about getting one of the new g-10 leeks. i have always liked the leek, but the crappy steel they were made out of was my only problem with it. i like the speed safe, but i do not carry one daily either. i normally carry a BM with axis, or a trusty SAK

I owned a couple of Kershaws (doesn't just about everyone like the CHIVE, at least a bit).

Didn't think the AO was worth it, either. A bit of niffty, but I moved on. Personally I'd rather have a full auto, less hassle to operate IMO.

Actually, I like the Chive a lot and have plans of adding a blue-black Chive to my collection some day. Wish it had 154cm, ats-34 or vg-10 steel, but I can live with its 420HC. Thing that concerns me more is how well the anodized aluminum handle will hold its looks in a pocket with spare change.

The novelty of AO was lost on me when I learned that autos are legal to carry here. I really don't even carry my autos that much anymore either, mostly balisongs. Still love my autos of course, but even those aren't quite as much fun as they once were.

I still want a new Leek though. Can't decide between a Random Leek, a G10/S30V one, or waiting for the Ti/ZDP189 one.

Ahgar, if and when the spring breaks in your leak (as it did in my whirlwind) call Kershaw and they will send you another free of charge. Or you can send it in for repair for free (minus return shipping).

Padawan, I've taken my whirlwind apart many times for detailed cleaning, and they are truely easy to disassemble. Three screws for the handle, three screws for the liner. Without the spring you may have to tighten up the pivot screw ever so slighly but it will still fly open with the thumb stud. I carried my whirlwind around for about a month with a broken spring. I thought it was just really linted up (and subsequently slow to open) and only found the broken spring when I took it apart for cleaning. If you like the knife but not the spring, buy the knife and take out the spring. Keep it somewhere safe, as you may change your mind later.

It has for me too. Although the trill has been gone ages ago. I have either sold off or traded, or given away all my AO knives.

what do you mean about the axis and compression locks being able to flick the blade open and closed? do you mean the auto axis or something?
