The Throw Down: FFBM vs. NMFBM

If it came down to just the FFBM and the NMFBM which one would be the last Mistress standing?

I know that's an unrealistic scenerio, because both would still be standing, but I'm just trying to decide which Mistress to buy next (of course, they will both eventually be added...:D)

From your experiences, which model chops better than the other? Which mistress could destroy a tank better? Between the two, which mistress would you want in your hand if the SHTF?

Which model would out perform the other in a "Throw Down"?

I've owned several of each, in the end the NMFBM is superior, but not by all that much. I think the FFBM feels like a "tougher" knife, but in reality, the NMFBM is still ridiculously thick. Having owned both and using both at the same time, the NMFBM with an equal edge to the FFBM chops a bit better.

From what I have gathered the NMFBM reigns supreme as far as chopping is concerned. However, the FFBM is no slouch...

The FFBM,

I stripped and somewhat convexed mine and it chops really well and bites deep.

The NM is going to bit deeper since it's only a quarter inch thick compared to the three tenths ish ness of the FFBM.

But like said before, the FFBM feels like a "tougher" knife, and I think the NMFBM is a little unmanuverable. For somewhat smaller work than chopping, I don't think the NM is as controllable as the FFBM.

Besides, you don't mess with a fat mistress

FBM LE looks the best, IMO, with its thickness and Satin finish and no NM treatment...

But I can see how the NMFBM is the best chopper/user of the bunch.

Agreed, the NM is THE monster chopper, but the FF will be more versatile.

Well, since most of the FFFBM are CG, it's a little unfair to compare them to a beautiful Satin LE.

There have been videos by Jim Ankerson, his videos shows the .25" NMFBM to be the winner. Everyone expects the thicker NMFBM LE to do much better.

Ya - I would say the NMFBM. The balance and weight and an excellent handel make it the tops for me - but watch your swing as you could remove an arm or leg!.

I would vote FFBM, but you really need to take in to consideration how strong you are! I am 26 years old, 168 lbs, and I hit the gym 3 to 4 times a week. Without any ego, I consider myself to be stronger than the average Joe...but I simply could not wield the NMFBM LE for very long. That being said, I can't wield my FFBM for very long either! Choose your chopper based on the job at hand. I use my FFBM for chopping heavy, thick, dense firewood, I use my Basic 11 mostly for trail clearing, and I use my Rat Mastiff for everything & anything in between. As the saying goes, "horses for courses!"

I've never held either knife and have the same questions.

Of course I'd love to own both.

I don't really have a use for one but want is more powerful than need in my case. :D

I don't have huge hands but a large glove is snug.

Which one is the most versatile ... balance, weight, ease of carry and performance.

Also which one can be had for a better deal .... Combat Grade FFBM ?

Anyone have any side by side comparison pictures ?

I'd really appreciate it !

You can see the FFBM at work in Snwbrdr202's post in the other thread here dealing w/ big Busse knives.

Any FBM is going to be more versatile than any NMFBM by virtue of the 1'' shorter blade, and lighter weight.

Among the various 10" BM variants, the CGFBM and the BWM are lighter and more versatile than the Fat Flat FBM (FFFBM).

There will be a JohnnyDarko BattleMistress Review-a-Ganza in a few days as I should be getting a NMFBM LE shortly. Although my FBM is not the fatty. So it may not answer your question but it will be fun to make.

Thanks Resin !

I'm thinking that a CGFBM is the one for me.

Of course I want them all.

You spelled it out with a few points I wasn't getting.

Here is a pic that has the three mentioned by resinguy

From the top on the left is NMFBM, BWMLE, Saber FBM .27". As far as weight goes the NMFBM is 30.3 oz., BWM is 22.9 oz., and the FBM is 28.5 oz. So not a huge difference between the NMFBM and the saber FBM. I don't know the weight on a FBMLE but I would almost guess it was more than this NMFBM. I have a flat ground FBM that's .27" thick that weighs in at only 26.3 oz. I think that one would be far more versatile than a CGFBM that weighs around 27.4 oz. It's really hard to pic just one though. That's why you have to have one of each. :D:p:thumbup:
