Morning campers! Hope those rose-strewn satin sheets weren't too hard to sleep on! ;)

I went for a walk with my girlfriend during the day yesterday, along a section of the Leeds-Liverpool canal.

We spent some time at a local bird sanctuary, and were just eating some soup, when a kingfisher came and perched on a tree stump about 5 yards away. Rachel managed to get a hurried pic, but I failed miserably. These birds are pretty rare here, and it's only about the third time I've ever seen one. Here's a stock pic for anyone whose unfamiliar with them.

After walking another mile down the canal, we came to a nice old pub, named after the railway which once existed here.

Jack

Jack, that image evokes some strong childhood memories for me!

I think I've mentioned before that as a child my parents owned a cottage in Derbyshire at Bolehill just above Wirkswirth. We used to often go to Cromford where my father (who is a book-hound) would spend hours in Scarthin books, a rare book shop located there. We used to have picnics on the banks of Cromford Pond;

This was the first place I ever saw Kingfishers. They nested in the banks and there were two pairs that would flit about and squabble over fishing rights.

Thanks for that buddy :)

Thanks for sharing your memories Paul, that's an idyllic spot my friend :)

I saw my first kingfisher in 1988 while cruising on the River Ouse near Bishopthorpe Palace, York. That was a memorable time for me too :) :thumbup:
