The TRADITIONAL sunday picture show!!!!

I see, in France they are called controllers. On the lines where I worked they were in the train only occasionally (for the control of the tickets). The rest of the time I was the only one on board. A good thing.

Dan.

Yes I remember the Controllers from my many travels in France :) The French rail system is much better than it is here today

You belong to the time when cows used to set their watches at the passage of the train. :) Sadly this time is over!

Sorry to hear that JP, I'm afraid those days have been over here a very long time. I was travelling by train on Saturday, and it really wasn't a very pleasant experience, trains delayed both ways, and overcrowded to the point where more than half the passengers had to stand up :( I was talking to an elderly couple, who had just spent a month in Miami, and coming back to England was quite a culture shock to them, and the worst part of their journey home o_O

The words "driver-mechanic" come from the time when train drivers used a mechanical tap control to regulate the inflow of compressed air acting on the brakes (you can see the conductor using it in the video posted by Headwinds at 2:45). This is no longer the case, electro-valves are used now. However, the term persists in a profession that is all the more conservative as it is known to be threatened by technology. Trains without drivers are already moving.

Cows are no longer putting their watches on time, they use smartphones, except Bernese cows and Schwitz, probably because they are Swiss and thus passionate by watches and conservative, knowing they are threatened by the biotechnology.
