Hey Hogs, Dogs, and Filthy Rats,

They say one man's trash is another man's treasure. I received the TRASH-1 and fell in love with the balance, ergos, and design. I felt the instant urge to bring this babe of a blade out the ghetto and into the bright city lights. So I did and now she loves me for it.

It was time for another mirror polished edge. So I re profiled the edge and the shoulders to 19 degrees per side (38 degrees inclusive). Once again, it took a while ---- but now I know this knife can't perform any better. Check it out friends!

Very nice!

What sharpening system do you use?

Exquisite...as usual Rob...:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

That mirror edge has not only made that knife go from Trashy to Classy, but it is now truly a "one knife option" akin to a SAK...

for instance, in addition to slicing , that edge can be used for:

a rescue device to reflect & signal light to an airplane flying overhead at 30k ft...

shaving your legs for Tour de France time trials,

reflect light from the mouth of caves into the dark recesses for spelunking,

& vanity mirror for your wife to check her lipstick on the trail! ;):p

but seriously...

what deg. did you set that bevel at...looks pretty laid back

Lmao yes yes indeed ---- I'll be sure to use this the next time I participate in the Tour De France --- it'll shave cleaner than those silly safety razors!

On a serious note about the geometry --- I find that along with creating a consistent and fine apex edge, the reduction in shoulder thickness is huge with respect to penetration/performance. The bevel has the height that it does due to how thick the shoulders were behind the factory edge. I thinned that down and made sure to keep the angle at exactly 19 degrees each side. It's sharp enough to do everything I need and durable enough that I do t have to be concerned with overly damaging the edge.

I put the same edge on my HHFSH and it performs/chops the way I would expect a 9.5-10 inch blade to. It has a .5 micron thick edge apex. I'm just waiting for some pants to come in from big Dave and then I can test her out.

You & I are of the same mind on the utility of a 19-20 deg. "V" on a camp knife like the TRASH...a very good balance...

I reserve the 15 deg. shoulder for my folders and finish with a 20 deg mircobevel...easy to maintain with a high level of sharpness!

BTW, the way the crinkle cut is removed from that laser sharp fine black smooth undercoat line just above the shoulder is so precise & totally badA$$ :D

Haha Thanks man! Yea I honestly don't need my fixed blade edge angles to be much more acute than that.

So Rob I have to ask...why did you choose 19 degrees exactly? As opposed to 20 for example? I am just OCD like that...20 is a nice round number:D BEAUTIFUL edges you make though. Any chance you could start doing work on the side?:) You have quite a talent.

^OCD? Don't you know?
Prime numbers are special snowflakes.
19 per side x 2 = 38; 3+8=11;1+1=2easy :p :D j/k

Thanks man! You're too kind -- I actually spent a good while thinking about the edge. I had some great conversations with many different people about the ideal geometry for hard use fixed blade knives. After taking into account the steel type (SR-101) and the overall mass/weight of the knife (14.75 oz), I had to factor in the Busse warranty (which doesn't take too kindly to re profiling a knife edge angle to anything too far off their factory set recommended angle of 20 degrees). Then I tried to think about whether or not I wanted to ever put a secondary/micro bevel and then maintain with my sharp maker.

So it finally came down to this ----- what edge angle will provide a relatively seamless angle transition into the primary bevel, what angle is durable enough that doesn't need heavy maintenance, what angle will handle all my needs, what angle will accommodate a easy to use/maintain micro bevel, and what angle pushes the knife to perform better than factory released conditions ------ the answer for me was 19 degrees.

Gradual transitions in blade geometry nearly always lead to optimal performance (for my needs at least). Since I didn't want to put a convex edge --- I stuck with the traditional V edge to ensure super strict edge consistency and maximize "bite". Haha hope that helped.

As for doing side work --- I haven't been overly drawn to the idea because it takes a good amount of time and I don't want to lose the excitement I currently get. However, that could change based on my mood or other factors. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Thanks!

Lmao --- I literally laughed out loud while reading this. The people in the elevator think I'm crazy. Lol

Well, be thankful you weren't drinking then... ;)
...after all crazy is in the eye of the knifeholder, can't hide it forever. :D

Great info in this thread, thanks for posting! Your work is top tier. I really to get myself a wicked edge and learn to use it.

Thank you sir! I appreciate it. I highly recommend it --- with enough practice, technique, and patience -- some great stuff can come of it.

Lol thanks brother --- while I'm glad this ones done --- the NMFBM is next --- which could take a while lol[/QUOTE]

Rob, I thought those Wicked Edge devices would not hold anything thicker than a 3/16in (which describes most of my Busses). Have you had to rig something to accommodate the bigger knives. I have been getting nice results with a 1in belt sander and leather strops for polished edges, but I occasionally think about trying the wicked edge; the thickness limit has been holding me back. Have you ever tried to convex an edge with that thing? I understand it can be done by changing the rod angle, but that seems like huge pain.
