The TRASH-1 that became the Classy One --- Mirror Polished Edge

Rob, I thought those Wicked Edge devices would not hold anything thicker than a 3/16in (which describes most of my Busses). Have you had to rig something to accommodate the bigger knives. I have been getting nice results with a 1in belt sander and leather strops for polished edges, but I occasionally think about trying the wicked edge; the thickness limit has been holding me back. Have you ever tried to convex an edge with that thing? I understand it can be done by changing the rod angle, but that seems like huge pain.

That looks very clean Rob very nice.

Fantastic Job!!!!

Thanks gents!! The Model that I have fits knives up to .40+ --- I'll be sharpening the NMFBM and the MOABOLO which is .35 thick -- so it definitely can do more than 3/16ths.

Hey Hogs, Dogs, and Filthy Rats,

They say one man's trash is another man's treasure. I received the TRASH-1 and fell in love with the balance, ergos, and design. I felt the instant urge to bring this babe of a blade out the ghetto and into the bright city lights. So I did and now she loves me for it.

It was time for another mirror polished edge. So I re profiled the edge and the shoulders to 19 degrees per side (38 degrees inclusive). Once again, it took a while ---- but now I know this knife can't perform any better. Check it out friends!

That looks great ! You did an awesome job. how do you like the wicked edge? What grit did you take it too if you don't mind me asking? Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance. Do you sharpen blades for other members ?

While it's not in the same class as Rob_Mob's edge, here is the second attempt on a wicked edge with a Trash 2. Pretty steep learning curve. The first attempt did draw a little blood but nothing serious. Pretty pleased for the second attempt.

A 9" blade takes quite a bit of work to re profile and sharpen. Would think it will get easier once the muscle memory kicks in. Super sharp at 19 degrees per side. The trash 2 is a wonderful and well balanced knife.

Thank you sir!! I sharpen the edge to 19 degrees per side and use the following grit progression:

Diamond Stones: 100,200,400,600,800,1000
Ceramic Stones: 1200,1600,1.4 micron, .6 micron
Balsa Wood Strops: 5 micron, 3.5 micron, 1 micron, .5 micron

I love my Wicked Edge Sharpener and I have yet to see a sharper blade at the same edge angle

Hey Man that looks great . . . You're well on your way. It certainly does get easier. Keep in mind though, that once you reprofile the knife --- it's basically a brand new high performing tool. The edge geometry gets significantly improved and it remains that way. All you have to do now is occasionally maintain on a Spyderco Sharp Maker. After a two or three years of maintaining it with the Sharp Maker -- you can pop it back in the Wicked Edge and work on the edge with 400 grit stones and work your way back up.

At the very least, you know your tool is functioning at its optimal level. Go out and use it to see what a difference it makes.

Awesome as always Rob. Quick question about the WE... Can it sharpen a tanto blade? Mainly I'm curious if its able to keep the transition between edge bevels sharp or if it would round it off. Also can it keep the chisel portion of the front of the blade nice and straight.

I hope my vocabulary concerning tanto blades is correct.

Hey Timmy!! Thanks man -- it's been a while and I've been far less active on the forums lately. Chasing that green money train before we pop out little ones.

Yes it definitely can sharpen Tanto blades. Unfortunately though it would need to be repositioned for each section. Here's a video:

I'm currently reprofiling and tediously sharpening my Standard Canvas slab HOGFSH. It's a compact Sharpened War Hammer . . . Can't wait :p
