Hey the Trident looks like it's exactly what I've been looking for.
I have a few questions:
How far can it be field stripped? What about detail stripping?
Does the tigerstripe version come without serrations?
How does the blade lock? How solid is it?

And where's a good place to order it from? I live in Canada.
1SKS has it for $75 US, is that a good price?

Thanks in advance.

Also if there's a history behind the design, I'm interested to read that as well.

Stridersrock,

First of all even though I myself am new, I would like to welcome you to bladeforums; I am sure you will find the wealth of information available to be of utmost value to your knife related activites (as I have :) ) .

Now for your question, while I myself do not own a trident folder (I hope to in the future;)) I think I can answer some of your questions.

Hey the Trident looks like it's exactly what I've been looking for.
Thats because It probably is :D:D:D

Does the tigerstripe version come without serrations?
I searched their catalog and I find no refference to a PE (plain edge) version.

And where's a good place to order it from? I live in Canada.

Yes, That is a good price although you might be able to find one for less $$ on E-bay

How far can it be field stripped? What about detail stripping?
While I don't know how to disassemble/assemble the trident folder, I do know that doing this in the "field" is not a good idea, also their is usually no real reason to disassemble a knife as most cleaning can be done with the knife fully assembled.

How does the blade lock? How solid is it?
I don't own one so I can't comment, however you might want to try searching for a review of the trident folder using the search function of BladeForums (located at the top of the screen). Also SOG knives are very high quality so I would tend to think that their would be no problems here. :)

Also this link might be of interest to you (If you havent seen it already).

Hope this helps,
SocIntel

BTW I LOVE SOGS !!!!:D:D:D

Thanks for the welcome. I searched the forums for feedback on the Trident, but didn't find much. I'm looking for real-world usage feedback.
But since the Trident is inexpensive, looks like what I've been looking for and is made by SOG, I'll take the plunge.

It's too bad the tigerstripe version isn't offered without serrations. Is the TF1 available? I'm guessing that it's plain black.

I would have ordered it already, but 1SKS says up to 14 days to start shipping. I want the knife ASAP. Where else can I order it for a good price?

The TF-1 Trident is available the blade is plain black and also has serrations, If you want a plain blade you will have to buy the TF-2 which has an uncoated blade.

As for better prices on the tigerstripe trident here is what I found, knifesite.com=$67.95 ,quickknife.com=$70.36 , crocblades.com=$72.12 and then there is always E-bay = ? → ∞ . :)

Hope this helps,

I have a TF2, it works fine, the blade wiggles a bit, but it appears to be a good lock. The indentation for cutting rope etc doesn't really work, might have to sharpen the knife a little bit, other than that, no real problems, haven't put it through a sufficient field test, but it's okay for yard work and playing around. Oh yeah, you can definitely find a new one for less than 75 on ebay, but look for nib only, you don't want anything used off of their.

I still haven't ordered it yet.
I emailed NewGraham Knives about shipping info for a quicker than 5-day delivery, but no response yet. Their price is $67.65, which seems like the best so far.

What about sharpening? I haven't bought a sharpening system yet, but I can go for an EdgePro, if not the Sharpmaker.
I don't understand the 40-degree limitation on the Sharpmaker. Does that mean 20 degrees on each side? If so, that might not work for my Strider fixed blades. Their edges are thick.

[update]
I just received NewGraham's reply and the fastest they do is 3-5 days.
3 days would be great, but 5 days would be next Monday.

$67.65 Thats a great price:eek: I wonder why I didn't find that one!!! :)

Unfortunatly, I do not own a sharpmaker :( but I have yet to hear anything negative about it, I would recommend doing a search for reviews on the sharpmaker using the search function of BladeForums.

Good luck with the trident,

I have the tiger stripe TF-3 and would recommend it. A few comments:
 • Lateral wiggle with locked blade--very minor
 • Veeeeery sharp edge out of the box
 • Handle is wide--nice to slice, bulky for EDC
 • SAT makes opening really fun!
The knife finds it's way with me on hiking trips. I've used it to do everything from whittling kindling to stirring hot chocolate and it seems to hold-up pretty well.

Silenthunterstudios,
I have found that most of SOGs assisted openers can be easily adjusted (blade movement) with a 5/64 allen wrench. This size fits all the Flash models I own. I am not sure about the Trident, but if I remember correctly it too uses this size wrench. The assisted openers need to have a certain amount of "play" for them to operate correctly, but this can be adjusted so the user should not notice much if any blade movement (side to side).

This could void the warranty, be careful not to strip the allen head on the knife if you decide to try this. (just one, finished adjusting it with a torx, worked fine)

I first broke mine in by opening and closing for a few days and then I carefully adjusted by turning screw to the right a slight amount, adjust until the blade comes out rather slow. Here is the trick, when you get it adjusted and the blade comes out with some resistance (slow), stop there and add a drop or two of light weight oil, this will instantly cause the blade to pop out freely. In the mean time you have taken out almost all the slack possible but it still opens freely. I can not feel any slack whatsoever in my blades, but they pop out very strong.

The cord cutter is designed to cut cord with the lock on and only if your blade is sharp. You may want to try a smaller diameter cord like para cord. All the Tridents I have looked at have been sharp enough to split frog hair.............. :D

P.S. I don't own a Trident yet and you guys are killin me ! :D

Yeah its killing me to!!! (still trying to find the best way to burn my money on SOGs) :D:D

I can't wait to get a Trident. It looks like a lot of fun.

New Graham Knives' policy states:
NOTE: On international orders Buyer assumes all risk of Loss or Confiscation.

I'm guessing that means I still get charged regardless of what happens to the knife?

And I'm jumping for the EdgePro Apex Deluxe model. Does anyone know where I can get that for a good price? MSRP is $190.

Thanks for the help.
There aren't enough photos of the Trident around, so I'll be sure to take a lot of quality shots of it.

Stridersrock,

You might want to do a search on froogle for the EdgePro Apex Deluxe.

And please do a favor for your fellow forumites and tell us what you think of it when you get it.

P.S. How about mailing me some money so I can buy one... o and robbie to, after all you owe it to him he invented the famous REVOLVER series of SOG knives !!!:D:D....

Just kidding :D:D

What edge angle does the Trident come with?

The Apex apparently can't do serrations. I don't know how to sharpen serrations, but I was hoping to learn. So I might pick up the Sharpmaker, if the 40-degree angle isn't a limitation.

I need to replace my fixed blade, my folder and my multi-tool. You think I could get a SOG discount if I bought all three at the same time?
I'm already ordering (not ordered yet, stores closed) the Trident and an EOD Powerlock. I'll go for a SOG fixed blade if I can get a discount. The Tech Bowie is really calling me, even if a little expensive. (Replacing my Strider fixed blade, however. Go figure. :P )

The Revolvers look really nice. But doesn't one blade point at your hand at all times?

Stridersrock, No, the Revolver blade that is not in use is locked within the handle. It is secured by a large pin that goes through the blade and 2 steel liners. There is a hidden stop within the handles (except the Double Action Revolver) that will not allow the blade to rotate down (blunted edge in any position) when pressure to the cutting blade is applied.

Take a look at this animation link (Hunter model shown), it might help you understand how it works.

Stridersrock,
Man, your making me drool, I wish I could afford to go out and blow that many $$$ on SOGs.:eek::eek:

I don't think You should have any problems with the sharpmaker. Also you may want to check out this link on the spyderco web-site

Also I own a powerlock and it is the BEST multi-tool I have ever handled, although you might want to replace the combo-edge with a plain-edge or serrated-edge

As for the Tech Bowie you are going to have to wait a while because it is scheduled to come out this june, so you may want to look for another SOG fixed blade or Revolver knife. :)

Good luck with the SOGs,

I ordered one TF3 from New Graham (to PORTUGAL  ) and it was a nice and smooth deal.

No worries with New Graham

You will love the knife.. :D

I just ordered a NIB SOG Trident TF-2 for $51 and change. I am looking forward to seeing just how well my money was spent on it. :D

Gosh ! thats a good price ! Your going to love this knife, it feels perfect in my hand, sharp and fast, easy to operate.

Robbie Roberson ;)

P.S. I don't have one yet, but handle one every weekend :grumpy:

OOPS! :footinmou

My mistake...it isn't the TF-2 I'm ordering, it's the TF-3 (the tiger-striped one with the serrations).

Lucky me, my folks have a knife shop, so they cut me really good deals on any knife or sword I want to buy.

I just hope the Trident works as well for lefties like me, as it does for right-handed people.

Thats even a better deal, and you should have no problem with the lefty opening. The dual thumbstud should handle this fine. I can open all my Flash IIs left or right very easily, so it should be easy with this Trident.

I like the lock release on the Trident just a tad better than the Flash series, it seems a little easier to operate. This knife looks like it would be the perfect slicer to me with the blade shape and profile like it is.

:grumpy: You guys are going to talk me into buying one this weekend if you keep it up........ :D
