I would like all thoughts on Benchmade rukus the good the bad hell give the ugly even. I am thinking of purchasing it as my next big folder for the outdoors

It's HUGE. It's THICK. It's SMOOTH opening. It's EXPENSIVE. It's blade steel is great. It's built like a tank. It's a tip-up carry. It will probably last forever or until you lose it.

I'd love to have one but I think I'd be too tempted to TIG-weld the blade open, make a sheath for it, and carry it on my belt as a fixed blade.
:D

I haven't really beat on mine too much, so I can't speak of it's field durability. But being a Benchmade, I'm not worried. In everyday tasks it has performed flawlessly though.
The Rukus is definitely one of the most ergonomic knives I own.....Very comfortable. I recently picked up a Mini-Rukus, and haven't left the house without it in my pocket since.
I think I found my new favorite!!

I've got both the 610 and the 615. As all of my BM's, they came shaving sharp. I like the S30V. I like the blade shape. I guess I just like them. But I'll have to say that I like the Mini better. The large Rukus is almost too big. The mini fits my hand better. And as everyone says it's hard to call such a big knife a 'mini'.
But I think you'll like the full size one too.

Acquired one today. Great blade, I absolutely love it. The handle has great ergos, but will take a long time getting used to. If I don't get used to it, it is gone.

Great blade, very thick in pocket (I take it out when sitting). Great smooth action. Blade play over time. when I went to fix via loctite, it completely misthreaded but BM fixed. Clip finish wears easily but BM will replace for free. Micarta wears beautifully over time, just keeps getting better and better looking. I've got a satin PE (#657/1000) and my dad has a BK combo. I prefer the satin/PE, but I generally prefer PE.

Also consider:
BM520/525
BM630/635
BM710/705
BM805 AFCK/Axis
It's my edc, but I would consider the mini version too...

I have a bad point to the Rukus, the clip is flimsy for a knife of this size. Get it caught on something and be prepared to unscrew it and bend it back in place. I altered my clip with a dremel a bit to keep it from catching on things as easily.

I have a 710 in d2 VERY NICE!!

That would be my purchase idea, 710 and Rukus, I played with a rukus yesterday, and I may just have large hands but it fells great, the pocket clip got in my way, but it can be reversed so it may be better the other way, It seems flimsy but for a knife that size do you really want to add even more bulk to give it a meatier clip, you might but it seems like its good enough, although the clip design would make it easy to get cuahgt on something.

If you have big hands, you'll like it. Have you tried the Skirmish (630)? Its nearky as big, has the same blade steel (S30V) and comes in many colors? Its also a little less expensive.

No I have not. I do like 710 that I have

The Skirmish is a beautiful knife. Almost as BIG as the Rukus, slimmer, and with a recurve blade. The Skirmish is a frame lock AND it's a tip down carry, which I prefer.

I've decided my next folder will be the BM635, mini-Squeamish. Maybe even the premium BM635-60.

One thing about these two models, there is NOTHING mini about the minis. They're big knives. Actually, the minis should be called the Rukus and Skirmish. The larger models should be called "maxis", or "extreme Rukus".... "extreme Skirmish"...etc

Did you guys see the auto-mini-rukus yet? I have an auto axis, and they're really nice, but I got it out of my system. It'd still be nice to play with one though. My wife asked me if I wanted her to pick one up while she's in OR this week :)

I hope you said yes!!!

I've checked out a Rukus in the store, but I don't own one. My rationale was simple - I'm looking for a large EDC knife. The Rukus, while very nice in-hand, was simply too long for comfortable, daily carry in my pocket. I like the blade shape, blade material, handle shape and handle material, but it's not meant for my jeans.

You mentioned carrying it as your wilderness knife - should you do so, a belt pouch may prove more comfortable. It may also allow for greater range of motion, as the Rukus could interfere with stepping up elevated terrain while hiking. Of course, the wilderness is always begging for a fixed-blade carrier in it

I had a chance to play with one at a show last year.
I would have bought it in an instant were it not for my deep aversion to thumbstud openers! This is especially true of the rukus as it's a long 'heavy' blade that deserves all the advantages of a faster opening system. My guess is I'd buy one if it had a flipper with powerful assisted opening. Everything else about it was great- especially if you have big hands.
