I have owned 2 AD's at completely different times in the past and kept almost doing that exact same mod to the choil - on both of them. I drew it up on photo shop about 15 times and I just never could convince myself I was going to be happy enough with the end result on a otherwise expensive AD. I sold the first one thinking it was a waste of time. But, I kept "WANTING" to like the AD and bought another hoping I could convince myself. Again, I kept trying to figure out a mod I felt I would be happy with. But, I couldn't.
Ultimately, I decided I needed my AD to look like the photo-chop concept at the bottom of the following pic - I am still hoping someday. :

Ultimately, I really just "Don't" like a Choil or Talon Hole.
.
I agree. I'd rather not have the big choil, but for me, it's better than the original AD handle design, which caused my hand to cramp, especially my pinky. I realized pretty quickly that I needed more "handle". My first attempt to improve the ergonomics was to remove the butt talon hole. This was marginally successful. I eventually added the enlarged choil, and that fit the bill. However, if I were to do it again, I'd try enlarging the choil first, and then see if it was comfortable. I'd really like to have not taken off the butt talon hole for aesthetic reasons.
The choil is just a stop gap though. I pretty much always choke up on the blade, and I've superficially cut myself more than once on the blade.
However, I really like the size of the blade. So I'm willing to live with the mods. The handle's still too square to me, so my plan is to try shaping some new scales and adding smooth bolts.
