The Ultimate Irony - Bitten by a Fiddleback

After laughing at my paranoia all weekend, Leah sent me a pic of a Recluse she killed in our bathroom this morning. I actually got to hear the very rare wife admitting she was wrong thing. And she appologized too. What the hell is that about?

I remember checking out the brown recluse spider on-line after I first started acquiring Fiddlebacks here on BF.

We have plenty of bugs/spiders etc. that manage to get inside our house especially down in our basement... ~1/3 unfinished storage and ~2/3 finished space. The back side of the house/basement is bricked and has windows and doors but the front side is cinder block and below grade.

I had never come across a spider that looked like a recluse until yesterday when I was doing some vacuuming. It scrambled out from behind a flat piece of corrugated cardboard that was leaning vertically in the back of a mostly undisturbed closet. It moved pretty quick and the size and color seemed close to some of the pictures that I've looked at. I did not confirm if it actually had six eyes (3 pairs). I didn't want it to escape so I vacuumed it up. I'll be keeping an eye out for more though.

Short movie clip link and a rather poor quality pic:

Whoa Phil, that bite was pretty gruesome. The pics are indeed educational. Glad it healed up with a minimal scar.

Andy, glad everything progressing in the right direction.

Part of the motovation for Fiddleback Forge was to educate folks about the little recognized Brown Recluse. My grandads place has always been infested with them. I guess Ive been lucky.

#9)... A startled (up to ~15cm legspan!) Huntsman jumping out somewhere in or even worse while driving a car would definitely freak me out!

You've got some nasty critters down under including venomous snakes!

Found a couple of more links to "on-line articles" about the Recluse:

so I understand, Fiddleback Forge is not about knives, but actually about spiders. Well I hate spiders and do not plan on buying any. However if you start making knives again, then I'm in.

Just come back on Friday, they usually switch the topic over to knives on that day. :D

You know Bob, the photos of that big chunk of flesh you took out of your finger with a Fiddleback knife looked a lot worse than the Fiddleback spider induced hole in my arm. Maybe spiders would be a safer pick for you...:D

The Jack Jumper:

The Australian JJ Ant and Odaon's post about the Gympie Gympie tree were both new to me...

But I was familiar with the Bullet Ant which inhabits the rain forests of Central and South America.

It is supposed to have (or be) one of the most painful insect stings.

Lol, I remember when my wife and I were much younger. She jumped out of a (slowly) moving car screaming as a huntsman was crawling across the roof lining of the car. Leaving me to stop the car from the passenger seat.

Now we live half way in the bush they are in the house all the time. Pretty harmless, just look scary.

She could never deal with bugs.

Dang Andy hope that bite heals up quickly. It took almost two years for me to get over the bite on my thigh.

My wife makes fun of me too as I shake the hell out of every pair of shoes, boots, gloves, etc before putting them on - especially if they haven't been worn for awhile, or stored.

Those suckers love dark, quiet places .
