The Ultimate Survival Knife

We also have to deal with the 2 legged vermin who will be looking to get what they can without asking and if faced with that situation, I'd much rather have a large, sharp blade in my hand, than a SAK.
I'll have a 12 gauge pump in my hands and a .45 on my hip. If they choose to bring a knife to a gunfight that's fine, but I'd rather bring a gun.

We've all got lots of knives, but why allow them to get within arms reach...

ras, I carry a 12ga Rem. pump and .45acp Ruger, however sometimes, depending on the exact situation, it's best to use stealth and surprise to our advantage and keep our firearms in reserve and protected from detection.

I carry either a custom 1911 .45 Springfield by Kings,or my Glock 17,and a nice hiking stick out of Hickory.

Only thing with 4 legs that I worry about is the Mt lion,Ive seen a couple and only one at that was close, thank god he didnt see me I think, and I enjoyed watching him drink from a stream.

If im out getting rabbit with my bow I have 3 arrows in my quiver with broad heads and 2 with small game tips :p

Did you do the micarta handles yourself or have them done somewhere. I have a BK10 in the mail and would love to modify mine.
very Nice!

THE SWAMP RAT SWORD (also could be called rachete)!!! i just want one of those sooo bad...

What ever knife you have be it a prybar or a paper thing razor it is useless if you lack the skill I Guess I got hooked on Conan and the rule of steel when I was young thats right "do you know the rule of steel"

"Conan's response to the Mongol General is an abbreviation of a real quote attributed to Gengis Khan: "The greatest pleasure is to vanquish your enemies and chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth and see those dear to them bathed in tears, to ride their horses and clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters." " (imdb.com)

conan's Father: For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. This you can trust.
[Points to sword.]

Conan: The riddle...of steel.
Thulsa Doom: Yes! You know what it is don't you boy. Shall I tell you? It's the least I can do. Steel isn't strong boy, flesh is stronger! Look around you. There, on the rocks; that beautiful girl. Come to me my child... That is strength boy! That is power! What is steel compared to the hand that wields it? Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart, I gave you this! Such a waste. Contemplate this on the tree of woe. Crucify him!

=my ultimate survival blade.

at any given time when im out and about, i have several knives on me. pretty much set at the moment for what im carrying -
busse straight handled badger attack (1/4")(right hip)
swamp rat howling rat (left hip)
leatherman wave (right hip)
credit card knife set (wich i carry just to carry)
soon to be busse desert mofo (in my bag)
set of 3 thowing knives (in bag)
1 small gerber folder in my jacket (though i want to get a bm 710 or similar)
oh ya... and a cheap 440-a folder my grandmother gave me in my trunk(doesnt come with me when i leave the car though).

when it comes down to it, i would have a hard time seperating my leatherman wave, SHBA, and mofo (was battle mistress). its just such a great set. the howling rat is for super cold, super wet, or if the shba fails, so its pretty much solely for back up. and giving to people who ask for a knife so i dont have to give them something more vital. mofo= general bushwaker (and wood)

if i had to take it down to one though - it would be the SHBA. its what i consider to be a perfect knife. wide flat grind, fairly acute edge (because of grind), 1/4 strength, super strong steel thats reletively easy to sharpen, near indestructable handles, nice long blade curve.

preferably though - if it were 2, it would be the mofo (because i have it, not necessarily because its the best of its size) and a leatherman charge (the new wave. once it comes out, it'll be on my hip, and the wave will be with the mojo indefinitely) in the tool pouch of the mofo sheath.

if i could carry a tool (non knife) with my single survival knife, it would be a half glass smooth steel, half 400 grit finished (diamond coat).

I agree with many of your choices. Usually, four knives are found in possession when hitting the trails.

1. A Frost's Mora Swedish army in a kydex sheath as a neck knife. Lately, sometimes replaced with my Allan Blade Pack Pal.

2. A Swiss Army knife, lately the most in use is a one handed trekker (also called trailmaster), in a belt Kydex sheath. I am looking seriously at a one handed fireman. It has a corkscrew instead of the phillips, and adds a seat belt cutter that seems useful as a drawknife. In town the Swisstool is handy.

3. A pocket knife of some variety from my SERE 2000, Benchmade axis lock, Opinel, puma, case, Spyderco, Boker, Gerber, etc. Whatever one or two has caught my attention lately. I like the leathermam Squirt and Micra too.

4. The primary sheath knife varies with the scope of the trip, weather expectations, and terriain expected. If I am travelling with others, then that can be an influence. Lately I have been using a RAT-7 from Ontario/Randall Adventure Travel. This knife has the perfect feel for me with the large Micarta handle, tough 1095 coated blade. It has replaced the Randall Model 1-8 I have carriied for the past 15 years. Nothing wrong with it, just retiring to my collection for occasional use. With the RAT-7, I never hesitate to pound the back with stick to split firewood. I also have a RTAK, Puma White hunter II, Becker 7, 9, Cold Steel SRK, Kukri, and Trailmaster that are used frequently. I also heve a D2 Tak on order and will be looking at a D2 RAT.

A GB mini and/or Scandi forest axe would be along if heavy chopping would be expected.

So my choice is, why one?

My ultimate dream survival knife would be a Leatherman Super Tool 200 with a full flat ground drop-point blade made of VG-10.

Allen.

I dont know how easy and cheap this would be but couldnt you have a blade made up then fit it yourself? I believe this link: http://www.equipped.org/alterpst.htm
will tell you how to change the implements on a Leatherman.

The search for the "ultimate" survival knife is similar to the search for the magic bullet or enchanted sword. The above reference to a series of quotes from Conan brings this to mind.

"What is steel compared to the hand that welds it."

Conan discovers that the maxium given him by his father;

"For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. This you can trust (the steel sword)."

is basically in error.
The greatest tool or weapon available to anyone is their mind. The ability to reason and use past experience is man's greatest asset. Time spent searching for the "ultimate" survival tool is better spent developing a solid base of woods craft knowledge and time spent in the outdoors learning those skills.

A fellow once posted on a gun forum the question. "What is the ultimate 1000 yard cartridge and rifle combo for hunting big game?" The question speaks to me of inexperience and innocence of the subject. First no one has any business shooting big game animals at 1000 yards to begin with. Second if they have the skill to pull it off they already know the answer to that question.

My uncle gave me a large knife (6 inch blade) made from a lawn mower blade and hand made sheath when I was 10 years old. I already had my scout knife and Sears camp hatchet. I used them both until I was out of high school. We spent endless weekends in the woods camping, hunting fishing ect. During this time I built a solid base of woods craft knowledge and learned to use what was on hand safely to survive.
When I got out on my own I retired them and bought a USAF Pilot's knife and a Skachet muti tool form a mail order catalog.
SKACHET.JPG

I also bought a full size axe and folding saw from a hardware store and took them with me whenever I could stand the extra weight .
For over two decades the USAF Pilot's knife, Skachet and one of several locking folders have been my companions in wilderness adventures from the Pacific coast of Canada to the swamps of Carolina. I have hunted, fished, backpacked, dug roots, made shelters, dressed game, done survival weekends summer and winter, run rivers, and just about lived out doors during that period. To be honest I have never found myself wishing I had a "better" knife.
In fact I think dependence on a single edged tool is a mistake in most wilderness or survival situations. It is one thing to be a plane crash victim or lost in the woods, but quite another to walk willing into such a situation with only one blade.

In the past few months a new blade has threatened to topple my USAF Pilot's knife from its throne. I just took delivery of a brand new Fallkniven A2 with a laminated blade. The blade's core is AG10. I am currently in testing to see how it will perform under camp conditions. I already think I may like an A1 with its shorter blade better and the Krayton grip may have to come off in favor of a bead blasted Micarta one. Time will tell.

Cheers

I'll be waiting on your replies, I know it 's not a work of art like other "outdoor/survival" knives but it's a USER!! Those knives don't need to much shiny details!

I like it ! :D It looks like a nice heavy duty user. What are the specs ? Blade lenght ? Blade Thickness ?

Well here are the specifics!

blade thickness: .240
blade length: 6.5"
Steel: 5160
Handle: linnen micarta

Only one knife? Not in my book. "Two is one, one is none".

I've always got a BM 140HS and Mora in my ruck and a BM 9100 Auto on me.

I like that busse blank knife....very cool.

Are the handles removable?

Nice texture on the grip ....looks like a real beater.....

Hey BiGoode,

Tnx for the nice comments, the handles aren't removable as I didn't ask for it. I'm not that found of putting survival stuff in a knife, if you lose it you might lose half your kit allong with it. So the survival kit stays packed on my body ...

The one who made the knife is real good in putting that fine texture into knife grips! You should see the other knife he made out off a blank! That thing really is a work of art! :D

do you have pictures of it to show? I dont like the hollow handle thing either......never a good idea to add a week point for your most needed item....

your knife :D
