I love spyderco and I’m starting to go towards benchmade due do the fact they have thumbstud. Spydercos are a lot cheaper though and can still face benchmade. I think spyderco is the winner. Both companies make great Made in usa knives.

They go by very different design philosophies.. That's like asking, Marlin vs Glock.

Grab the popcorn!! :D

Both companies make very good knives, and it all comes down to preference. Thumbstud or opening hole? G10 or FRN?

Hmm have had very limited experience with both, but I'd prefer spyderco over benchmade if they were my ONLY options.

Better bang for buck, ymmv

Too close to call. I like big, tough, heavy folders and right now that gives Benchmade the edge with the Adamas, Onslaught, 710, Bedlam and Contego. Spyderco has traditionally been where I've looked for more refined slicers, but they just put out the Manix 2 XL and Lionspy and then there's the upcoming releases of the Ulize, Laci Szabo folder, Starmate and Military 2. I guess I'll give Benchmade my vote because their folders that I like have mostly been released, and it's possible, although very unlikely, that all those gorgeous Spyders I mentioned could suck. But I suspect Spyderco will win back the title as my favorite before the end of the year.

Both companies make some nice knives.

I know Sal Glesser is at the helm of Spyderco because he personally interacts with his customer base which is outstanding. I like how Sal does business and have a lot of respect for the man. Most of my collection is Spyderco: great knives made by a great company and I like to support them.

I have no idea who runs the show over at Benchmade. Not sure if I care either. I own two Benchmades and they are very nice.

Oh this is tough...Benchmade for looks and lock, Spyderco for ergos and ethics. My favourite 'users' are a Spydie UKPK and a BM 14205. I wouldn't be without either. Have had top flight customer service from Spyderco in the past, but not yet needed BM's...I hope that's clear then.:p

Oh, and as a quick addition, I evaluated both based on models. As a company, I'll take Kershaw. I've had good experiences with with Spyderco and Benchmade, but I get the feeling that Thomas W. from Kershaw would get personally involved if I ever had a model that did me wrong. That's one heck of a security blanket to have when I'm looking to purchase a product.

How about I like them both!

Each for different reasons which is why I always EDC a Benchmade and Spyderco. They tend to compliment each other well.

Spyderco:
Military
Para2
Manix2
Native5

Benchmade:
TSEK
Adamas
AFCK
Mini Grip

What's not to love. :)

I'm a fan of both companies, but I might lean a bit towards Benchmade due to the variety of designs they offer.

I have always been a fan of Benchmades and not so much of Spyderco, for 2 reasons. I generally don't like lockbacks and it seems that most of Spyderco's line still use them. I like sculptured metal or G10 scales and most Benchmades have them. Overall Benchmade produces higher priced products than Spyderco although now Benchmade has some lower priced models. Spyderco at least on this forum has a very devoted fan base and some of the models that they like the most, the Para2 and Military, cost as much or more than the average Benchmade. Right now I own 5 Benchmades and I'm shopping for another, and I own 1 old Spyderco. I'm considering trying a couple of Spyderco models to see for myself how they compare. I'm sure that models from either company have the quality and performance that is comparable so it mostly depends on which style you like better.

i'm gonna beat this dead horse for a second and say Spyderco makes better knives.....but Customer service wise Benchmade wins hands down.

I have my blue Para2 in my pocket again today. The rift is at home again, with my kershaws, strider, etc. :-)
