I picked this up for $525 at the NYC 2000 custom knife show.

I have since used it lightly out of curiousity, but I neglected it and there is some discoloration on the blade. There are no dings or scratches or imperfections that won't be completely removed after refinishing. Busse said it would take a few weeks to refinish for me, and it will look like new.

Its INFI

Just wanted to post it to make you all jealous Sorry for bad picture res, I am using a camcorder, when I get a nice camera, I'll repost new pics

Also, I am not ready to sell it, but I am curious what you might think its worth if I decide to sell it in the future.

A Busse AXE!

1whoOinks is going to oink up a storm!:D

It does look rusty, but still worth the $575 easy:D

Brian,
You have to be a registered member to view the link at USN. The worth of a Busse proto axe? If it's anything like the other axe that I've seen, I'd say about a grand.

Brian, send me the pic at progunner@warpnet.net. I will try to get it on here for you. If this is what I think it is, you may have just sealed your fate as far as ever getting any sleep. There are guys around here that would hound you ever waking minute for that thing. As to it's value, that could get interesting. I heard there are only 2, but I don't think any one has ever verified that. Since they are rare and not likely to ever be made again, the price would be up in the air until one of the 2 or 3 owners sold one, then the price would be set for the others.

Frenzy schmenzy! There are bigger fish out there to be had. :D

Damn.

Damn.

Damn.

What is wrong with that one? It looks a lot rougher in finish than the others I have seen.

I wonder if I should send it to Cliff Stamp to see if he can destroy it :) I honestly dont think its possible, this is one MEAN BAD @SS hatchet.

The only other Busse axe/large hatchet I have seen (in a picture) does not have the spike at the top like this one does. I'm guessing at least some of what appears to be roughness in the finish is due to the lower resolution picture.

brian12345, Welcome to BladeForums and the Busse forum in particular, and thanks for the post! If you can get a higher resolution photo of the axe, by all means send it to one of the gold members in the BF Busse forum and I'm sure they will be happy to post it for you. You did good for the price you paid!:D

mschwoeb, Thanks for posting the pic here!

I will try to get a higher res pic asap.

Several Emails came my way already...and its sterile, there are no markings.

I unfortunately threw out the custom sheath that Busse supplied with this knife, Im sure it might have added some value to it. Before you guys flip out on me, the "sheath" was made of cardboard and tape :)

Any ideas on what type of refinishing I should have done, if I decide to go 3rd party other than Busse? Or for collectors purposes, would Busse Refinishing be the way to go?

And I havnt done anything at all to it whatsoever, resharpening or anything. Should I attempt to clean up some rust oon my own with fine steel wool, or would that hurt the value? Its going to get refinished eventually. I have toyed about the idea of keeping it for camping, because as hard as I abuse it, I do not think that I could damage it past the point that re-finishing wouldnt make it look like new. But I may just put it in the safe and get a cheap fiberglass handle gerber (any one want to trade a case of gerber hatches for this :D )

Also, please give me some ideas on prices, because when I mail the hatchet out, I need to know how much to insure it for, becuse it costs more money to insure it for $1000 than $500, and if it gets lost/stolen in the mail (I can just see some of the Busse freaks trying to get inside jobs at UPS right now, lol), I want to be compensated for its true value.

UPS is usually pretty good with packages but their insurance coverage sucks. I had a guy I work with have his stuff totalled by UPS and the driver signed the forms, everything legit and documented...BLAH BLAH.. It turns out the $1000.00 dollars worth of Insurance put on the parts amount to nothing more than a check for $200 and a "We are Sorry"

I ship my knives USPS with tracking, I know the Busse knife won't get damaged by anything the Mail can throw at it, I just don't want it stolen ;)

If the AXE would come up for bid on an auction for example, I would offer no more than $800 for the AXE, and be out bid. The Auction would probably end somewhere around $1000-$1050.:D

Damn! Wish I had a digi-cam. Saw from Brians post over at USN he's in Miami. I'm just a bit north of him in Broward county. It IS kinda neat, but like Progunner said there are other fish to fry. At least for someone with limited infi funds.:( :( Perhaps we could get together for a beer chat and look see.:D :D Brian... ever hear of Big Dawgs Sports Cafe?

For this one in the shape it is in, that might be reasonable. For one of the others I have seen, I would say that is a low selling price. You can bet at least $1500-$1600 for one that is marked and in great condition. But that is my take and by no means the final word. Just a little piglet snorting around the trough.
