The (un)Official SDFK Thread

If I were in his shoes, I might create a signature series HDFK and serialize them to maybe like 10 per year. Include a premium sheath from Bill (Duramax), Gold Heat Treatment and Premium scales similar to the DEK-0.

Now that is a $1000 knife which won't take from his standard knives. Instead of going backwards on a cheaper knife, go forwards on a Premium Signature Version with all the bells and whistles.

Reading this kinda makes me scratch my head. You can’t get the HDFK you want now, so you want Nathan to produce a small handful of them in an ultra rare and desirable serialized manner? What if you don’t get one?

”Instead of going backwards on a cheaper knife”….you missed the whole point of this SDFK buildup. Nathan has explained many times this was intended for Amazon (or the like) at a cheaper price to get people into the world of Delta 3V and Carothers knives. You’re telling Nathan to do the exact opposite of his plan.

If you want all the bells, whistles and an $800 signature series knife, jump in the preorders, I’ve got several that cost that much! Lol.

You must have read it wrong. I was able to get a HDFK, but it was very difficult. I understand the rarity and value.
Suggesting he create a line of a premium version had nothing to do with the difficulty and finding one.

I also didn't miss the going backwards to a cheaper knife. Nathan has said that he likes to keep his knives cost lower, but due to the economy and the fact that material costs and labor have outpaced the cost he would normally charge, he would not be making something like the HDFK and still be able to keep it at the same cost when he initially brought it out in 2017. This is why hes gone with a more frugal version of the HDFK.

Others in the buy, sell, trade section have pined for a HDFK because they are as rare as hens teeth. While that is something Nathan is not going to do, at least not for the forseeable future, my suggestion was for people who would pay that type of money for a rare edition knife. You are a good example of that.

I don't understand what you are trying to imply with your post.

We had a special customer that needed some knives which is why we're producing the Utility Fighters now. We recently talked with them again about next year and we're producing extras on this run for that purpose, but the year after that, anything is on the table. And, coincidentally, so is Abby's first year at State...
Well you know we’re here to help you but please don’t put off that folder.😚

While this probably is not the thread for this. I will just say that I wouldn’t mind seeing some form of special edition classic CPK’s return. Even if it’s 10 + years from now , cause I know I’ll be around to try and score them 👍😁😁😁 But I still look forward to all new CPK knife models and models released with a slight tweak 👍😉😃
So fingers crossed for the SDFK 🤞 landing in my mailbox 😃😃

Since my chance to buy an HDFK at a reasonable price in the second-hand market is literally dropped to negative numbers after @Nathan the Machinist response, I better should wait for the (SS)SDFK. I regret asking the question now :) :) :)

I wouldn't give up hope. I can't speak for everyone, of course, but I, personally, am not the type to try and capitalize on what some might deem as an investment when buying a popular knife. If I were looking to move my HDFK, I would be looking to get what I paid for it (maybe less since I have definitely used it) - the fact that the market currently dictates that it is worth more than what I paid means little to nothing to me. Called it principled narrowmindedness but ultimately, I am not interested in scalping others - especially those who share in the same interests that I do.

Now, with all that said, my HDFK is not available. It is THE knife that I will not do without - come hell, high water, zombie apocalypse, birds, nerds, or whatever.

I would just exercise some patience (something that has served me rather well in this hobby) - someone is bound to be of a like mind to myself, except they might actually want to move their HDFK.

This.

I let my NIB HDFK go last year for about what I paid for it (the MC is my 'cold, dead hands' backwoods go-to. Some folks prefer a ~6" blade, but my preference has been 9" - 10" blade large camp knives, for decades).

*** then again, knowing what I know now, I should've probably listed it 'For trade only'. Maybe for something like a vacation home in the South, on no less than 20 acres... 😋

I think you sold it to me, it's still in the same condition if you would like it back. I'll let it go for a vacation trailer in the south and ten acres 😂 ;)

Nathan very kindly and unexpectedly sent me a SDFK. My first impression is that it's more akin to the regular FK(2?) than to the HDFK, even though it's bigger and more badass than the FK(2?). Again, first impressions; it's a real man's knife. If you are not a real man- which is fine by the way- you might want to look at ******* knives instead.

If anyone is interested in observing a little testing here and there, I'll be putting it to work starting tomorrow. Funny enough, I have a spec ops sheath kicking around from the very first FK(1?) that Nathan sent me, so I can at least carry it, (unlike my new Kephart, which I will need to make a sheath for. Oh and the dagger, gotta sheath that sucker up too- maybe I'll do a few extras).
Just need to remember to have my cell on me which I usually don't. But if no one's interested I won't bother. It's just a knife, and you all know what knives look like, which I assume is why you're here. Let me know, I'm fine either way
Always down for one of your 'in-use' videos.

I am definitely interested in seeing it in action.

Lorien Lorien - Looking back through this thread I see no actual pictures of the SDFK, just some computer models Nathan posted, so anything you post might be the first sighting of the actual knife, and it would be great to see it in action. It would be interesting to see side-by-side photos with the much vaunted HDFK and the FK# as well, if you have either of those handy.

If I missed the actual photos of the SDFK can someone point me toward them?

That is very kind of you. I will put this idea to a test. I will ask for HDFK for a price it was paid for and see how many responses I get.

Though I suspect your response is a bit tongue in cheek, it's worth a shot - set a limit for how much you are willing to spend and stick with it. I have let plenty of knives slip through my fingers, including a CPK or two, because the price wasn't right. Patience and principles - I may not get every knife I'm after in as quick a time as I'd like but it has worked out pretty well for me so far.

(ETA: I recognize that my posts above might be interpreted as me attempting to project my own philosophies. Please note that isn't my intent - everyone approaches this hobby differently and I absolutely respect that.)
