Urban backup, oooh! Is that a chisel grind?

Like the looks of it...

I like how the handle tapers down on the Backup to give it a solid, no slip handhold, the Hideout looks like something
you can really knuckle down with as well.

Nice pair!

I like the ideas, i think the upper swedge looks veryc ool and helps giev a knife a useful point

I was kind of hoping the members of Test Team 2 might chime in here. I was planning on sending these to them to test.

I looked at this last night. I like the bigger one a lot--although not a double edged fan. The small one would be great for a conceal knife but needs a handle for easy holding and use in a rapid, adrenal charged situation. I'm going to carry and use the heck outta them both! If the bigger one performs like I think it will, I'll be getting one.

Disclaimer: I have many years of edged weapons training, knife and sword specifically. Looking forward to holding these!

The bigger one could also be made with a unsharpened swedge, or no swedge at all. It could also be made with the top edge being the primary edge, for reverse edge use. I`ll get some kydex molded, and send them to you at the end of the week when I go to the post office, if that works for you.

You have read my mind. The UB looks great!

BTW:

Hope everyone is doing great. I know I haven't posted here in quite a while. No disrespect at all!

Good to see you here again. I have asked Hugh to be a part of the test team for these, and he has agreed.

I like the lines on the urban backup -- especially with the no swedge option, or at most, about 3/8" of swedge.

I really like the design of the UB. Even if the belly wasn't sharpened, and just the top/straight edge, it would be great. This is one I carry regularly up front at about 11 o'clock:

Only the straight part of the blade is sharpened, pikal style. Seems very simple to me. Using 'ripping' motions, in reverse grip edge in or forward grip edge in, would make the UB a very effective self defense/weapon retention oriented knife. Looking forward or checking it out.

Nice stuff John -

I see a resemblance to the smaller XD.

I hope my friend Art got a deer - he is going to take pictures and review the XD/XM while field dressing one if he bags one.

best

Once again JK you are full of surprises! The Urban Backup looks perfect for CQC. Perfect knife for the knife fighting art that I am learning for life, PTK.

I try to keep coming up with different ideas, I don`t want to become "stale", so I`m trying to cover all bases. Now if I can get some orders for these ideas, I will be happy!

Ok. I've had these a few days and here are my first impressions: (no pics yet)

The backup is easily my fav. I'd like the handle to be a bit longer and no way on the double edge. Too easy to cut yourself in various grips or using an assist from your other hand. I'd round the handle even more and start the grind height farther up to come to a more zero edge rather than the extra bevel. Form the kydex a bit more to the contours or the handle for a "lock" in case you want to wear it inverted. Add a possible loop too. In reverse grip my meaty hand covers the handle and my pinkie locks into the guard area, a bit more handle would help if you needed to draw it quickly and the inverted positioning is good if you are going to use regular grip and conceal it.

Deep breath, because this may start a flame war:
I'm not a fan of the term "knife fighting" because well, it's stupid. Jumping around trying to avoid being cut while attempting to cut the opponent is asinine. No one "fights", they cut and are cut. I do NOT recommend using a knife to deter an altercation. I've taught various martial arts for over 30 years and have extensive edged weapon experience. You cannot kick a knife out of someone's hand or catch the blade or block/punch them before getting stabbed or cut. That's Hollywood crap.
I'm sorry to pop any egos out there but it's true. Best case scenario is to run like hell if you get a knife pulled on you. If you decide to pull a knife on someone, the legal/moral ramifications are HUGE. your life will be forever altered. It is a last ditch effort! Yes, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 but if you really want to protect yourself learn how to use your mind first, feet second (as in running), fists last. Carry an asp over a knife or a gun. And get training. Then get more training.

The Hideout is too small for me. I'd get it with a handle and no choil. This is a great pocket sized knife, useful for everyday tasks. I recommend it, just not my style. John has several PERFECT SIZED small knives. Rockywolf's Choice, I think I'm the only owner of it as a pattern, his EWOK, Pocket Scandi, and his old EDC. Any one of them has seen a ton of duty as a backup tool. My pocket scandi has a clip on the leather sheath, and my EWOK is in a pocket sized pancake leather sheath with a fire steel slit in it.
This knife does have potential. If it was already in your hand and you ABSOLUTELY had to use it, brachial or femoral would be easy to reach and it would be all over. Once again, do NOT ever use a knife in this way unless you are certain you have no other course of action. Use it as a tool for small jobs, as a spoon to dig your sardines out of the tin and put on your cracker. Have fun and carry on!

My observations are not attacks on these knives. I've had a relationship with John for years and own many of his knives. He is my go-to maker. An honorable man whom I consider a friend. I get passionate about knives and to hook them with combat is ages old. Unfortunately, we live in different times. People can't even carry knives at work without fear of retribution. While I don't agree with it, it is the way things are these days.
