The USPS lost my Benchmade LFTi 760

I recently (about 10 days ago) won a Benchmade NIB LFTi 760 at auction for 177.00, I was ecstatic. I tracked it for a couple days and it stopped in MO. I watched it's non-movement for three days and called the USPS to open a claim. A claims officer called me back yesterday and pretty much told me it was lost. I am heart broken... I am a fairly serious collector of Bob Lum's collaborations, and this one was the last piece to the puzzle. Not to mention being out the money. I doubt the USPS, ebay, or Paypal will make me whole. If you have had a similar experience and know of some way I can get my money back please share.

Thanks

I've had tracking go stale for a few days and when I call the USPS has always gone through hell to track the package down- as they should if it goes missing. The last time they even took a description of the knife in question and sent it to the dead mail facility in ATL. That's where packages that get seperated from their labels and things go. You might need to call back and check with someone else. And don't give up on it being delivered. The last knife that I had this happen with showed up several days after the USPS couldn't find it. Sometimes the tracking just doesn't get updated when the package moves on. And I believe you may be able to open a Paypal claim if the shipper didn't insure the package.

You paid by PayPal. The item does not arrive. File a claim, and when the shipper cannot show a delivery receipt, you get your money back.

Find out how long you have to file that claim and be sure to file on time! You might want to contact the shipper ASAP and explain what's up.

don't panic. It will show. When it arrives take a good look at the address label. I bet something is wrong with the zip code. Usually when they sit like that 9 times out of 10 it's a wrong or un readable zip code.

Yep, I'll bet it's on it's way back to the sender. It may take awhile, but it's happened to me. After about two weeks of no movement it shows up in the system headed back to the sender. Any slight mistake in the address can cause it. Good luck and keep your hope. If it's truly lost, you can get your money back threw paypal, but I'd give it some more time. Definitely let the sender know that it may be returned to them, to be on the lookout, and that you didn't reject it.

Thanks for the encouraging advice people, I needed that. I just emailed you Bigfats on your regrind. I tried to open a claim through paypal online and it said that a claim was already submitted through ebay. I guess I'll just call paypal. If it shows I will definantly inspect the label. I have notified the shipper and they are ready to help. I wonder if covering the bar code with tape would cause this. I was told at the post office not to do that.

I had a package go missing in the postal ether once. After 3 or 4 weeks the seller and I considered it lost. Fast forward another month or so and it just shows up in my mailbox one day. It had a tracking label on it, but not like the ones you fill out yourself at the PO. I asked someone at the PO if they could run the number and tell me what happened. All they could do was find when that internal label got affixed and track from there. Before that...? It was just lost in the system at some unknown location until someone found it and put it back on track to me. Strange but true.

Hope your case is just one of misdirection.

Well, my package finally came. There is a twist though, the package had a big pack of Orbit gum in it. Luckily I had opened a case with ebay and they refunded my money before it came. So either someone in the USPS opened it, or this turd tried to scam me and it backfired. Ha. Just for everyone's protection, the seller's name on ebay is adam_stl, and (NAME REMOVED) from the return address. I would recommend not doing business with this person. I wonder if he is a member here?

Don't know the guy, but imt wouldn't have been the first time someone on ebay tried a scam like that. Then again, some folks in parts of the country seem to have regularly occurring problems with the post office. I feel very lucky in that the delivery persons I've had encounters with have all been extremely nice, and very respectful of any mail or packages being delivered. I am glad you did get a refund. It sounds more ike the guy sent you some gum and not the actual item you wanted.

Well ebay emailed me asking that I return the refund... I have also sent the seller an email asking for a picture of the receipt to show the original weight. That would solve the mystery right away, but I don't know if he will comply especially if he is the shyster. I believe I will be able to get pictures of the package at all the scan locations. If USPS tampered with it, the tape would be absent/different in the scans before the disappearance, compared to the ones after. The only tape on the box was a single piece of that foggy scotch tape placed over and adjacent to the flap, not long ways. The adhesive on the small flat rate box completely failed to stick on top of that. I don't know if ebay can force me to refund the money since the original case is closed. Here is the box.

To my knowledge, tape is still being produced by 3M and is still sold in rolls. I cannot belive that some people still don't bother to use tape.

I am bad for overtaping. I am always worried that the package may get so wet that it would ruin the knife or box. I tape almost the entire box for the most part, and wrap the contents in plastic and bubble rap, secured by wax packing paper. Better safe than sorry.

Same here. If you're getting a knife from me, I'm assuming it's not your first knife and you'll be able to open the box. If it is you're first knife, you'll cuss me until you finally get into the box. :p

What is ebay's basis for asking you to pay it back? Do they think it's a USPS theft issue as opposed to the seller not sending your knife in the first place?

HAHA I am the same way! If some sticky finger USPS employee wants to steal the knife in my box they are going to need a really sharp knife :D I count on the fact that the thief would move on to easier pickings. If you buy a knife from me sorry about the tape ahead of time:D

I had a bad experience with one of the mail companies, they decided to send my laptop to the wrong house. Unfortunately said house didn't have some moral people living there and decided to keep said items, along with another package that was suppose to be delivered here, both right before christmas. My laptop the Samsung Chromebook $250, I had to wait over a month till I manage to get my hands on another. And than the other items worth over $200 for a smaller family member and it was a mad dash to try to replace those and a lot of work with the shipping company. I think a family member talked to the delivery person who said they delivered a bunch of packages down the street instead of here or something along those lines is how we finally got some answers.

lol I am not the only person who overtapes things. I tape every possible opening of the package close, and than the item itself is usually wrapped in bubble wrapped and taped so it's huge. With styrofoam pellets stuffed around (swear one company i buy from keeps giving me a lifetime supply with each order). If they want to open it they are going to have to make it obvious there is no sneaky way into the package.
