I have to admit this is hard for me to say . I have(in the past)bought more than one wiltshire staysharp knife . ( I know i have lowered myself in your estimation and I apologise ! L:O:L) It was a time when I was was chasing dollars and wanted an efficient lifestyle where speed of consumption was more important to me than what I produced. In other words I was hurrying myself towards the grave . I have found a place for them on my workbench/shelf.They make reasonable scrapers and gouges where I don,t want to employ something more important to me that will get dulled or injured .
I also rescue old butcher and carving knives from flea markets . It is amazing what you can pick up for fifty cents or a dollar at a garage sale . I get some of the old sheffield steel carving knives that are a little too long for blade thickness and trim them down to make a serviceable skinner out of them . I take the ends and make them into small game broadheads . I have only done a couple so far . I figure it is a better end for them than to be used until dull and then dumped in the back of someones cutlery drawer .

In the end I think my original sin has been absolved by rescuing fine old knives from an inglorious end in the shadowy depths of a cutlery drawer . and giving them new life Do any of you guys do similar things ?

Heck yes...there's fine old steel in them thar blades. They will often sharpen better than anything except the newest of the supersteels too. Of course...they are a lot easier to sharpen too.

I like the idea of a disposable blade. In Waterman Gardens in San Bernardino, they called that; "Kill a guy, throw the knife away"

I have made small game and patch knives out of old ivory handled sheffield and Russell table knives. Bought them for $5 a piece cuz they looked kind of ugly and tarnished. Those suckers are like RAZORS.

Don,t they make nice little knives ? Most of the ones I get have kinda wobbly blades . Most are meant for carving the family roast and so have a limber blade narrowed by use and sharpening .Once I get down to about the last three inches of blade they have seen a lot less use and are quite sturdy enough to use as a skinner . I can,t wait to have need of a patch knife . so I can make one of those .
