The valley, me and my BK-3

I really enjoyed that sir! Seriously thank you for posting. Anytime you are out and about again, please post pics!

I've made one of these before, not too bad after the first few rows of getting it figured out. I think there's a howto on Instructables.

Thanks, as always, for the great info, Doc!
Thanks to a little headscratching on a trip this spring, I can usually ID a Hawthorn now, and Now I have a use or two for it. As for the rest, I'm taking notes :D

Thanks Pointy. I'm going to check out Instructables.

again thanks for the great post and pic !!:)

Thanks frozen1, glad you liked it.

To clarify my post Doc; I envy the emptiness of your local outdoors areas, all the places around me are full of people pulling up in pickups, and running the radio while "fishing". Now, I am somewhat limiting what I consider "around me" to within an hours driving time because I already live out in the middle of nowhere, but the places that you would want to hike at or camp in are for the most part either full of people you don't want to be around, or have serious restrictions on practicing skills.

As far as the "weirdos" comment, I was referring to the BK3, it seems to be the weirdo of the bunch, the only BK over 5" in a plastic sheath, the only BK with a chisel grind, the only BK with a wire grabber, the only full production BK with serrations, and the list goes on. Most people (myself included) see it as everything except a bush tool at first.

Anyhow, great thread (as all of yours are).

Thanks oXide for the kudos AND the clarification. :D

Nice pictures. I wish I had a place like that near by

Thanks Theknife. It is really nice there, but only a shadow of its former self. The idiots-that-be decided it was a good place in which to build an expressway. It was fought against for 50 years but finally succumbed to all the greedy developers.

Thanks Doc C! Your posts are always informative and entertaining, if only we could get Tradewater to learn your ways. For some reason your link for the baldric sling doesn't work for me though.

Hey Murphnuge. Thanks for the compliment. I just tried the link again and it worked, although for the first 20 or 30 seconds, it comes up as 'Way Back Machine' or something like that. Give it a few moments and it should redirect.

Doc

Thanks Vanguard. I like to take pictures when I'm out and about. That way I get to enjoy the hike more than once. I decided to post these, though, because of the BK-3 getting so much attention lately.

Great post Doc. I love those types of posts that some of you guys do. Someone a while back (couple yrs. maybe?) would post pics and include kind of a story, some were urban pics and some were rural. Thanks again for the walk.

Great thread Doc! I always look forward to you posts. You and one other northern friend, he lives in Nova Scotia, always drive me nuts with posts of wild rose hips. Here I only ever find them on old home places where nature has mostly reclaimed the land and the roses run wild. The Hawthorns like you have there is something I seldom see down this way. We have some trees with some shorter thorns that could be used as a needle in a pinch, and could probably be incorporated into a dead fall trap for added effectiveness, but I seldom see ones with thorns that long. Bryan Breeden was kind enough to send me some Honey Locust thorns to play with and I am tempted to plant a few on my land to have around, but friends who live in areas where they are abundant tell me I would regret it. I doubt that at my age, but my kids and grand kids might :) I really like your baldric rig. I have been wanting to make a baldric rig for one of my larger knives and I really like this idea for it. I wish somebody could explain to me why people here can seem to pack out the empty containers of stuff they packed in. It has to be lighter on the way out since it's empty, yet I am continually finding empty bottles and bags.

Yo Mist......

Honey locust is freaking EVIL......Think razor wire with an attitude and apropensity to go right thru tractor tires and childrens feet.....Including this childs, when he was a child, a bunch.....EEEEVIL.....Great to plant all around your place if you are ABSOLUTELY FREAKING CERTAIN that the zombie apocolypse is nigh......Otherwise plant it and some muliflora rose and pyracanthus at your enemies house, late at night but, if you plant it in the dark you will be a pin cushion in pain.......EEEEEVIL........

Sounds as if you've planned this a time or two boss?

That's exactly what my friend in Illinois said when I wanted to dig up some of his honey locust saplings and bring them home. He said I was welcome to them, but I would regret planting them on my property. I suppose I could plant a few just a few meters over on the neighbor's side of the property line :) I'd love to buy a few hundred acres of land in a square and plant a dense hundred-meter-deep swath of honey locust around the perimeter...

They planted some at Ft. Louden, outside the walls......I do not know if this is historically accurate or not but, it would make a lot of sense.......Somebody barefoot or wearing moccasins would be in a world of hurt before making the walls........Ouch.....you would feel as if you had been put in the Cuisinart and pulsed a few times.....It would take the aggressive attitude I woke up with that day and flushed it right down........

I hate honey locust with a passion we have a lot of them in IL. Best bet for a perimeter fence would be osage (hedge fence) better for game to pass back and fourth too.

Doc how big of a hank of cord did you use? about 100' or so for that harness?

Thanks for sharing. I love this stuff :)

Hi Doc, great post! I'm quite tempted to give the belt a try. Good to see a fellow Ontarian in the forum!

Cheers!

Thanks sharp'N'pointy. What part of Ontario are you in?

Actually, the baldric is a 2 piece affair. I made it so one is the right length to be worn as a belt and the second with enough length that when added to the first, it's the correct length for the baldric (over winter clothes). About 70 to 75 feet in the first and about 25 feet in the second.

Another option is to make the belt with 550 and the second piece with the same buckles but webbing strap to give you some adjustability for length. I hope this is clear, if not, let me know and I can post some pictures.

Been away from forums for too long due to work and travels. The photos are such a treat and I look forward to trying out the BK3 and BK16 incoming. Thanks Doc for this thread.

Cheers!

Thanks, please post a pic or a link if you get a chance, no rush. I just got 3, 1000' rolls of black, tan and OD with some buckles and small stainless anchor shackles. That sounds like a very functional piece of gear the way you did it (belt or baldric). I would like to have a gun sling in that braid. The wife and I both watched a U-tube video and she picked the braiding right up, me not so much yet.
