The Versatile Trail Hawk

Aside from being lighter, does the Trail Hawk have any advantages over a Pipe Hawk? They seem quite similar in their intended use, so I was a bit curious if the trail hawk had any advantages other than being lighter and more packable.

I cant think of any significant advantages the Trail Hawk would have.

Thanks for the vid Woodsman, I've been thinking of trading out the boys axe...I need to lighten up the trail load, and versatility in a tool is one of many great ways to do it.

Just so you know if I had the choice between a good boy axe and a Trail hawk, it would be a axe.I love my hawk to death, but it is no replacement for the wood processing capability of an axe.

Agreed Woodsman.
A boys axe is an incredibly versatile tool; and for bigger chores, and pretty much most winter overnighters, I guess I wouldn't trade it out. At least not until I gained knowledge of the tools potentials and limits through experience with it. On the other hand, all I usually need for an overnighter is the plentiful deadwood laying around for a couple small meal fires, (which is minimum with an Emberlite), and then a small fire for evening ambience and to keep curious critters at bay. So, looking at this tool it seems to suit the bill for the light shelter building and light wood processing I usually do with a boys axe, and have done with a folding knife on the more minimalist hikes.
~ No, I won't retire the boys axe by any means.

I really hate myself for reading this thread. I don't need a tomahawk, and I find Lynn Thompson contemptible at best. Yet today I stripped the paint and filed the handle for the Trail Hawk I bought late last week, mostly because of the video in the OP. What's worse, I don't even feel like I wasted my money.

Cold steel puts out great products, though some of ther product are WAY over priced. But there are a lot of product that I think are worth the money, trail hawk being one, and there recon1 tanto. I don't care how he promotes his products.bottom line there really good tools. Crk&t has great products also and there all made in Taiwan. Both company's have tight tolerances. Cold steel is up there with some of the other big name.....

Cold steel makes some awesome toys for the money, not ashamed to admit they are one of my favourite knife companies, despite the mall ninja rep and shady business practices. For me it's about having fun and still having money left to pay rent and buy groceries.
