After 6 years in Japan, I have decided to come home.
I think I have finally caught enough of what I came here for to keep it going on my own.
(That's after 1000 classes at the hombu.)
We have a baby and I want her growing up in America.
I built a suit of armor, I earned rank in three different schools, I have a Japanese tattoo that covers my entire back, butt and shoulders, I learned to play the biwa, I've received far more knowledge from the Boss than I ever thought I would. I've have been very lucky and very blessed and I am grateful.
We'll be back every year, of course, I can't not bring Takako and the baby back to see her side of the family.
I am ready to go home, though. I miss America and I really know why. I used to complain about America but I know what the alternatives are now and I may be less critical and more constructive from here on out.
We are aiming for early July. I'll get us a place and a job and go back to school. I want to get a degree in Aerospace Engineering and make some real money for once.

I want to go hunting with you guys and hang out in a stress-free environment.
(They don't have stress-free environments in Japan, not even at Disneyland.)
I want to do all sorts of fun stuff and we will when I get back.
Oy vey! Mama Mia! Yeehaw!

There is a time for everything.

I'm curious, too. I've dallied long enough. It's time for me to earn my shodan...I'm just not sure where I'll be.

If by some miracle you can hit Atlanta in June (say about the 9th) while job hunting... We'll be having a little gathering called Blade Show. It'd be great if you could make it and meet a few of the regulars.

How's the little one doing?

Never having been there, I've heard that Japan has the capacity to drive sane people over the edge when it comes to social norms and behaviors.

Sounds like one of those major life points...good to hear the decision you made. Lotsa streams need to be walked here...way too many smallmouth to catch and never enough time.

Yeah, back to Plano, Texas first. My parents will be happy to have us and Mama will go crazy with a baby around.
I'll get my butt in school and start fixing up my resume.

So glad to have you back in the states Danny. I'd love to meet you at Blade Show too!!!

I'd caution against any belief that there are high dollar salaries in engineering though. I would not do this career path again. I've got a pretty prestigous position under a prominent researcher, but no future I trust my family to after 5 years. Engineers are the MOST expendable position at any company, and are laid off first EVERY TIME. I mean, you gotta keep the sales force, right?

Danny, I lived in Germany for eight years. I'm originally from KS, so the cultural divides were pretty wide.

I soaked up as much culture as I could, traveled, learned the language, enjoyed the cuisine, studied the history, etc., etc.....

Then, after all that time without a hint to warn me, homesickness struck on the 4th of July, how corny!

Luckily, I had met my lovely wife on a trip to the states just prior to that, and was ready to spring the pond again.

I had even greater culture shock upon returning to the US. You can expect the same, I'm sure.

Did you ever dream in Japanese?

I live in FW, maybe we can get together?

Andy

Cool, so Danny's going to visit Japan every so often....just like Godzilla:D A serious congrats on your future home-coming. Career path, wife, baby, martial arts education..what else could you hope for:)

Jake

Congrats Danny!

How about, "The forumite formerly known as Danny in Japan."

or perhaps "Ninja-Back"

best wishes!

Tom

Man...I have been there, done that. Out of the country for 2 years...that was enough to welcome back some good-ole-fashioned American luxuries...YES, luxuries.

I will always be grateful for:
carpet
electricity
refrigeration
hot showers
toilet paper going down the toilet (instead of a garbage can)
going at least a couple weeks between illnesses
cars
airconditioning
and the list goes on...

It's statements like yours Danny that justify my position: I think every US citizen should be required to live outside the country for 6 months at least once in their life. Sure would be a lot less complaining about things here on our home soil...and a lot more gratitude...and a lot fewer "feelings of entitlement".

Would love to hook up for some Texas hog hunting anytime....I'm about 5 1/2 hrs from Plano.

Looking forward to seeing you here.

I agree with this 100%, and it isn't necessary to go to a 2nd or 3d world country to get that feeling, either.

Danny,
Great to have ya back bro!!

I like a couple others lived outside the US for a bit...Was nice to get back...Granted NOW I can curse fluently in 3 languages! :)

After spending the better part of four years bouncing between here and points abroad as one of uncle sam's misguided children, i was glad to hang that coat up and stay stateside. Then again the middle east isn't that bad once you learn not to eat, sleep, or use the toliet when the winds blowing (i hate sand)
