The Wise Man's fire drill.

Bamboo? I just happen to have a grove of huge stuff on the homestead. I wonder how soon it would round off under the string's friction?

Like Joezilla, I also have one of the bamboo setups w/plug for hand drill somewhere. Works well. I love the versatility of bamboo.
But I do prefer a spindle extension still as it allows for all parts to be replaceable.

As for Bow drill use, if you leave the outer cambium of the Bamboo on the spindle, wrap the area that is to be hafted and leave a node upper for the socket area above (I'd also wrap, nodes crack too!), you'll find the outer cambium to be pretty darn tough. Not easy to imprint at all.

A little rough sanding to improve cordage grip would help. Also, bamboo isn't perfectly cylindrical. You'll find it has a small but distinct flat side to some thick stalks about 1/4" wide or so, which will be an added spin plus....

BTW, to add to Magnussens point, Hand drills are used with the widest part of the shaft spinning in the fireboard, not the other way around. You'd be surprised , this is a common mistake!

Ha! Did I just get fan mail, Doc??! :D

How many years has it been since that article? Never mind, I really don't want to think about the eons passing!

Observations On Goatskin (BPT Fall 1998, page 72)

The Back and the Beam (BPT Fall 1998, page 73)

Working Gourds (WW 2-4, page 34)

Cane Pole Fishing (WW 3-1, page 28)

Oh, My Aching Back (WW 4-4, page 44)

I might be wrong but was there one or two in American Survival Guide?
