I just got a bunch wood back from K&G today, and I thought I would rub it in a little! :D It took all afternoon to clean it up, but I finally finished.
This is some of the very best Curly Bastogne walnut I have ever seen!
And the Maple burl ain't bad either.

Nice, Ben. I love it when the wood fairy visits. I just cut scales last night from a bunch of mesquite burl blocks I just got back from Faron Moore.

Love the walnut pieces where the curl is at a diagonal. And those are some great burl on the maple.

this is meant as a joke and i hope you take it as a compliment: That stuff looks like you stole it from Burlsource's stash. very nice stuff

randy

Very cool stuff there Ben.. I love walnut. Do you source the wood yourself ?

If you're trying to make me jealous it's not working...............dammit.............yes it is. :grumpy:

Yes I sourced the wood myself. That way I can keep the best pieces all to myself! :D

Just curious is that walnut originally from CA somewhere (the wood not necessarily the supplier). I got some that looks very similar and have trying to decide whether to get it stabilized or not. It looks so very good natural when finished.

I got them out of Oregon, I am not sure where they came from originally.

Great looking blocks Ben.
I feel the same way whenever a new batch comes back from stabilizing.
I don't know why but it seems like the Bastogne Walnut like you have has more of a weight gain and better flash to the figure when stabilized than the other Walnuts.

Thanks Mark, I went with the heavy clear like you suggested. They gained a ton of weight and have awesome flash, even at only 100 grit!
I can't wait to get some of it finished out on a knife. I think I have more wood than I have time now!

What is the heavy clear you speak of. Is that something you have to ask for?

I'm curious how y'all are cleaning them up? I have little bit of a hard time getting them flat...

I just use a 36-60 grit belt to nock the boogers off, and then hit them on my disc sander. Its just like flattening anything else.
