The 'Woods Duo'

Good combo. I like to team my fixed blade with a SAK or Multitool. I usually do a Mora of some kind with a Vic Humtsman, Camper, GAK (Safari Trooper), Forester or a Leatherman of some kind (Sidekick or Rebar now). If going on a long outing, I add a tomahawk or hatchet.

I like to use scout/camp/SAK knives the most for a folder or a good trapper or cattle knife set up. A good punch (reamer, awl) blade on a folder is what I have found to be using a lot lately, so I tend to lean towards SAKs, Leatherman and Scouts more.

We tend to focus a lot on that one 'perfect' woods knife, but most of the time, I really appreciate the usefulness of two well-paired knives (plus a larger, wood-processing tool when needed).

A versatile fixed blade, combined with a good folder, is a classic tried and true combo, yet I haven't seen much on here regarding people's ideal pairings (and why), so I thought I'd kick this off with my favorite 'woods duo':

Carried this way, I can slip this in a coat pocket, pants pocket, whatever, and it won't interfere with a pack waistbelt. This duo will handle pretty much all small-to-medium tasks I've ever had a need for. Let's see yours.

A Friggin' Savage set-up my friend.

At the moment... Kabar LHB and 3 3/4" German "Koller" stamped hunting knife, I love that little knife, stacked leather handle, full tang, visible at the bottom. Kinda like a kabar little Fin with shorter handle, different pommel and a full flat grind.

I really did try uploading pics but I didn't work, I uploaded them further down in the thread after achieving success.

1st successful pic upload ever!! Did it with Imagur, tried both picassa and flickr, neither worked..

My woods combo is my Victorinox Swisstool and my Bark River Aurora. My Swisstool is something I am NEVER without.

+1 on the Swisstool, a Spirit X version for me, paired with an Izula and riding together in a KSF Adirondack sheath. I also managed to shove a small length of ferro rod down in the bottom for a bit of extra insurance.

It's funny I was just doing a little research on the swisstool, and the Kabar bowie is at the top of my short list.

the Kabar bowie is at the top of my short list.

As it should be my friend, that thing is a friggin' machine. My only regret is that it is sooo extremely well balanced. I wish it were a little more forward heavy given how much heavy wood processing its owners put it through. I think that would help with arm fatigue. But the thing is unstoppable.

My shortlist comprises of a Kabar/JAB Potbelly with its more weight forward stature for sure, she's my next target..

Also, I should mention that the sheath really is as bad as people say it is. The one in the picture is certainly not stock. I bought mine to fill the empty sheath of a broken cheapie bowie of the exact same blade proportions, so it worked out well for me.

I have boxes full of knives. Big, small, in between. Fixed blades and folders. Every time I go afield, I probably have a different combination. ;)
Yesterday, while squirrel hunting in the Ocala NF, I carried a Swiss Army multi tool, a 3 1/2 inch, 1095 blade by D/P knives, and a Protech Doru automatic.

I would concur...personally, I doubt there is one knife that is perfectly suited to all tasks. If I had to choose between a larger and smaller knife, I'd take the larger one, but it is hardly ideal for all tasks, obviously the smaller, finer ones would be challenging for something with a longer blade.

I am quite fond of the 6-8 inch fixed blade combined with a folder/tool in a SpecOps sheath. Either a Swiss Army or I really like the Outdoor Edge blaze--its orange, grippy, economical (~$30), trim, stainless, and has a nice profile. The SO sheath pouches also allow for a little more room for a fire rod or whatever. A nice rig set up. Should the canoe capsize and all your gear sinks, at least you'd have the blades and be able to start a fire.

Good thread...

Isn't that the truth. I only have one box full of knives but there is still a lot of choice, almost too much at times. I am actually putting a pack together and going through this struggle right now. I'm leaning to bringing my small forest axe regardless, the rest can be more of a weight compromise, like an ESEE 4 . Hell it might just be the axe, a Mora, folding saw and a multi tool. I can pretty much garantee now that the multitool is going, because a metal detector is coming along also.
