The worst sharpener ever!

Well, he clearly didn't quite know what he was doing, but I have seen much worse on youtube. Like the guy, who was lapping his waterstone on oily asphalt and used his naked forearm to strop a blade. Right next to this video is a chef who has positively SOAKED his japanese waterstone in oil..... .

And quite frankly, the knives this guy sharpened in this video, I am not sure I would get sharp myself

There are many things labelled 'steels'! These include smoothly polished ones that won't remove blade metal, and textured ones, ceramic ones and even diamond coated ones--which will remove blade material and are 'real' sharpeners.
Greg

I've never had a great deal of success with smooth steels. The grooved ones can remove metal, but its a small amount, and the edge is not nearly as good as that off a smooth ceramic. At 30-40 strokes, the guy in the video will definately remove metal using a smooth or grooved steel, by fracturing the edge. Also, I've read here that the steeled edge, while sharp, doesnt last as long as the freshly sharpened one, even from a fine ceramic.

he doesn't know what he's doing. I think it's clear that he doesn't maintain the angle at all. I agree he should've just used a sharpmaker, but he must still learn to keep his blade straight, lol....

That was a great demonstration by an expert. "How to make your sharp knife dull in 9 minutes and 5 seconds".

Edit: In just a few minutes of surfing Youtube, I found an even worse video, where the "expert" demonstrates how to "sharpen" a knife using one of those cheap plastic pull-through gadgets. The only comment so far was a great one-word review: "pathetic".

Click here for a good laugh.

That looks like it comes from something called "Expert Village"?!?!
