I cant remember the last time I had to use a bottle opener . I have a Leatherman Kick and want to file it down into an awl or something useful. Maybe even make it pointy like a needle.
Do you guys actually get use out of a bottle opener?

No! I think it's wasted space also. (That's just my opinion though) I carry a Vic. Spirit so at least it has a screw driver on the end. That is the main reason why I never EDC a Wenger knife. It's very sad for me, I love the knives but I cant get over that wasted space, (for me).

not beer drinkers, eh? most of the good beers don't twist off...

i use a bottle opener all the time, mostly for other people though

i guess i can see the Wenger thing. i never need to open cans, i've mostly used the can opener on my knives to try them out

The lanyard ring is useless ,too. Im going to file it down to something pointy. Maybe I could remove a splinter with it then.

I thread a split ring through the lanyard attachment on multitools. The split ring makes it easier for me to remove the tool from a belt holster, especially when my hands are cold, wet, or achy.

Quoted for truth:D

The bottle opener is probably my most used tool.

 for can openers, cap lifters and lanyard rings.

The beers I prefer need a bottle opener, and the only time I ever encounter twist off caps is when we are out of the better brews (all beer is good, some are better than others :D .) That goes for some other bottled beverages, although not as many as in the past (in olden times, it took a cap lifter to open a Coke. It's true! I was there to witness! :D )

Can openers used to be an important EDC for me, but with more cans coming out with pull top lids, they get used less often in that role. However, there have been enough times even lately when they come in handy that I like having one available.

Because I usually dummy cord my edc and sometimes use them on a ladder or over water, the lanyard rings also get a workout. This is important enough to me that I selected a Pioneer instead of a Soldier solely because of the keyring attachment.

All those things are good to have on a multi-tool, if not always for their intended purposes, then as a expedient tools for particular applications. That's another big part of their value to me.

i use a bottle opener as much as i use a knife.

i carry a vic bantam because there are really only two things i need frequently, and it has them both.

No tool is useless. :D

If I had to give up on one, it would be the bottle opener rather than the can opener, because I can use the can opener on bottle caps. O can't remember the last time I used a bottle opener, but I used the can opener for years, rather than bother taking up counter space with a big kitchen model.

If you're thinking of modding the bottle opener, why not make it into a chisel, which is a neat little tool I've seen on some SAKS.

Me too! I have a Bantam Alox that is super light, sharp and looks pretty darn classy.

I use the bottle opener on my sak recruit more than most other tools. It is a handy screw driver too. The can opener is rarely used, but the screwdriver on the end of it sure is handy.

I agree, turn it into a chisel, I love the one on my swisstool. Plus it can also open a bottle in case you need to.

Worthless??

I usually use a fixed bottle opener when at home - a Pulltaps corkscrew that has a very efficient bottle opener. But my multitools have seen their fair share of use while opening up a cold beer!

Some observations:

Victorinox has a better bottle opener design over Leatherman tools, period. I can't comment on SOG, Gerber, or any other brands, but I can say with complete confidence that Leatherman dropped the ball on their own bottle opener design, especially in the Juice series. I'm afraid to even use the Juice bottle opener because it's so damn flimsy. I love the Juice models, but their combination bottle/can opener/wine leverage tool is worthless (it chips glass out of the wine bottle when you use it).

The Victorinox combo bottle/can opener is perfect - nice and thick for opening stubborn bottle caps. It could be more pointed or sharp for getting underneath the bottle cap, but other than that, it's great. I wouldn't use anything else.

I didnt realize the bottle opener gets used so much. The only thing I use it for is to throw sparks off a fire starter.

That's why SAKs have so many blades - something for everyone! :D

Wouldn't it be great if we could custom-order our own favorite combination of tools?

I drink Bud (twist off cap) and I'm proud of it! The other beers don't have "born on" dates so there's no way to know that they're fresh. :D ...ok...ok... If I could afford to drink Trappistes Rochefort everyday I would... :foot:

And that alone makes it a good thing. Why dull a knife blade?

I actually tried to use the can opener on my juice S2. It was terrible. Or I just don't know how to use it.
