The yes and no of unsheathing a khukuri -- pix.

A question for you Uncle Bill: is that the way the Gurkhas unsheath a khukuri? I know in Indonesia, they're supposed to unsheath a golok that way (the Yes! one that is). I've never owned a khukuri before, but judging from the blade curve (which necessitates unsheathing it in a curvy motion too), doing it the right way is mandatory.

Hi Rey:

Not mandatory but highly suggested unless you want to risk the chance of doing some very nasty damage to your fingers. We had a forumite cut himself by using the "no" method. And, I have heard horror stories over the years about neophites cutting themselves seriously by using the "no" method.

Vote "yes."

Uncle Bill

In the "NO" method, can it cut through the sheath by the force put on the edge of the blade, instead of the spine? Is the knife so sharp it may do it if you just grab the sheath and pull the knife out without giving it any more thought?

Jani,

I'm no expert but I believe the answer to your questions is "yes." The way I've trained myself to unsheath is to press downwards somewhat with the heel of my hand while, at the same time, lifting upwards with my fingers. The slight wrist movement thus created allows the spine of the blade to "ride" the top inside portion of the sheath and keeps the edge from making contact. Of course, I also avoid wrapping my off-hand fingers around the sheath. I hope this makes sense.

Good job, Brian. The main thing is to use good old commmon sense. Something that all of us, including myself, fail to do at times.

Uncle Bill

Thanks, Brian!

If you are wearing it on a pistol belt, the problem does not arise. In fact, you may have the opposite problem. When taking off my belt, the shop 2 surapati fell out and put a gouge in the floor in front of the reefer.Right in front of my Mom.Not good.

Ghost, you may want to put a leather shim in the scabbard. Or you can go all out and soak it in water and then shrink it. If you want to send it back I'll fix it up for you so there will be a good fit.

Uncle Bill

I think that I will have to do both. I rubber cemented a piece to cover the slit. It`s brn.but will be covered,I suppose that I should have dyed it.The wood in the mouth should be covered as well.A shrink comes last. A wide BAS frog will cover the karda slit.I was using the extra reach to prune suckers on the yard trees, It had to be sharp to under cut and then slice them off.I did not rip any bark. I dislike using saws for this, They are no fun, The long blade will reach in without my fighting branches too much.It won`t split Oak so, I wore the AK on the rt, side to take care of the heaver work, Nothing short of a maul and a couple of wedges will handle some of it.As the PC crashed, I installed WIN 98,Coral and Photoshop. When I read the directions, I should be able to play with the big boys.

Win 98 and Photoshop! I am afraid of win 98 and I have not had the time to try to master Photoshop. Have you had any problems with 98? I know before you are finished you will have scabbard just as you want it.

Uncle Bill

Top:Win98 is different.I`ll have to learn IE also. I couldn`t stand it and dyed the patch.

Can't let excitement get the best of us or the Khukuri may get somethin' pretty good anyway.
