The yes and no of unsheathing a khukuri

I thought I'd help Rusty out by bringing this over from the archive. BTW, I corrected the notation about the size of the khukuri -- it's a 12", not a 20".

In case anybody is wondering the khukuri is a 12 inch Ang Khola.

I see you're editing the post but I'm not sure why. Can I help or explain something, Rusty?

OK Brian, I got the links to the two pics of the scabbards up, but I can't figure out how to make them appear like the pictures of Uncle Bill drawing the 12" AK. Somehow I also fouled up the top pic also. Can you fix so all four pics show, so we see the right and wrong way, and the reason why?

I guess the picture of me at age five as a blonde must have been truer than I thought.

Beautiful, Brian. This makes it obvious why we need to listen to Uncle Bill.

Thank you.

Fixed. An extra space had sneaked into the code for the first picture. If you click the edit button for the top post now, you'll see that there are actually a couple of ways to get pics to appear. The first 2 use HTML code and the second 2 use UUB code, which I think is easier to remember.

Yup, Rusty, you couldn't be more right. Those scabbards are tough but they are not khukuri proof.

I've never had anything as dramatic as the bottom pics occur, but I did have an incident last week that drove the point home for me -- literally.

Two of my scabbards had become MUCH too tight over the winter so I set about the "soak & wedge" method of adjusting them. I don't have any wedges big enough to accomplish the refit on their own so, as I've done in the past, I used tongue depressor type sticks forced into the scabbards along with the khuks. As I was forcing a Sirupati into its wet scabbard with the sticks -- carefully, so I thought -- about a half inch of its tip poked through the leather. Thankfully, none of my fingers were anywhere near it when it did.

Yeah, the Chainpuri scabbards have the brass bands, and the wood can expand or shrink enough for the bands to fall off.

The leather covered scabbards don't have anything but the leather holding them together. If the wood shrinks or the leather stretches enough, the result is the same.

Sonam told a story of getting his first khuk at an early age and pulling it out the wrong way before anyone could stop him. Shall we leave it at it being a lesson he's not yet forgotten?

BTTT

And Dave, I always wondered why Bill never corrected the part under the picture, though he did post separately after much kidding that it was a 12" AK and his hands weren't really that huge.
