The Zing is it!

Hi Bluejayburley: I suspect that your aftermarket scales are causing the detent ball to bind on the blade, thus impeding the opening. If you'll notice, there is a relief on the inside of the original scale that allows the lockbar/ball to move without binding.

Once you get that corrected, a drop of STP Engine Oil Treatment thinned with WD-40 applied to the pivot area will make it open even faster......

Wowee, thanks for the personal attention, keep up your great designs and custom work, and I will do my part by saving up to buy one of those customs, LOVE the Rampage grind!

I noticed that as well about the extra lock bar space on the scale, I kinda thought it wasn't necessary at first, now corrected. After working them in they flip very nice as from the factory. I don't really care for the original scale material, and one of mine had thin sharp edges sticking out from the metal frame that I had to trim, but all your work is impeccable, as far as I have seen.

I love this forum.

RJ Martin is my hero and an inspiration! (and I haven't even met the guy)

Who can diagnose an issue, based on a users bad description alone? What a craftsman, you really know what your doing. I tried putting the original scale back on the lock side and it fixed my issue, flips so buttery smooth again now, its amazing. Reading about your past work has kept me going at learning to flying RC helicopters too.

I have one side oem black and one glow in the dark blue and a little bit of tweaking/sanding to do. I have been waiting on parts and decided to scavenge some washers from another Zing which revealed a stripped pressed in threaded nut on another "new" knife, good thing I have extra scales.

Also a big thanks to Dan, who gifted me his last prototype Krytoglow Blue scale set for the Zing because I am OCD about blue scales. He even offered to fix it for free upon hearing of my dilemma, but now that I know what the issue is I can tweak it to my specific tastes. Backing up a freebie gets a lot of admiration.

There was an orange Zing sitting at my local shop for a few weeks. Didn't jump on it because I'm saving up for a small sebbie.. sort of wished I picked it up

I wish I didn't miss this thread... I already put my order in on a website and was considering one but couldn't find much praise about them for me to buy one. This would have sealed the deal.

I broke down... My first orange knife will be a Zing. Just won one on that online auction. Really excited!

It took quite a while but I finally got my zing. Great little knife. Gotta love a good manual flipper with a nice detent. It just flies out. It was a little bit offcenter when I got it, but when I took it apart to clean the saltwater out (bead blast 14c28n doesn't like saltwater) and put it back together, it centered perfectly.

I just take a brillo pad to mine then oil her up! I use it as a work knife!

Aww man the zing is being discontinued, first the od-1 now the zing, its okay though I bought two just in case this would happen :P. Gotten a lot more knives than I did back then but the zing always gets attention (in a good way). Whenever somebody asks about the grooves I try to give them the most outlandish answer i can think of. I managed to convince a friend that the grooves were the result of an ancient Japanese metallurgical process and that the knife was custom made and worth hundreds of dollars. Hw believed it for a few months until he saw it online :P. Also the zing has always reminded me of a baleen whale kinda weird I know but somebody else must see it too.
