I would extend this to every home-improvement project as well. It just feels like something is missing or incomplete somehow if I didn't get hurt along the way...
If I got hurt every time I took out tools, my wife would not allow me to use tools anymore, and I don't want a divorce. Learning to be safe and careful is probably the best marriage advice I can give a craftsman
Now days a only hurt myself from time to time (they can still be major hurts), but I would say %75 of what I make I have don't bled on, or been burned by, or put my hand into a belt while working on.
It is only possible if you are building this theoretical knife in your mind, and then if your not careful you still bleed all over or drool or something else!
When I started working as a shoe repair man, I cut myself so often I wouldn't feel it any more.
I'd just notice blood stains on the white counter
I get bitten by my knives, but only minor cuts. (sofar!)
