There’s just something about knife collecting!

I “collect” many things. Everything is used so collection may be the wrong word but flashlights, guns, tools, knives, backpacks, saws, etc all come and go but I always come back to my knife collection as my go-to thing to enjoy.

You can use a flashlight for half the day (I always carry one), you can use a gun at the range or in the woods (but carry one often), you use tools every day but they’re for work, but knives are not only used several times a day but enjoyable to take out and just play with. They have a special place in all of my things for sure.

I love this place and I love knives!

I find knives interesting because there is no limit in what someone can design ~
Agreed. I bought my first knife in my teens in the late 90’s. At that time the Benchmade AFCK was the most advanced knife I could imagine and when I finally got one I thought it was the end of my collecting. Looking back it’s still a fantastic knife but what a world awaited me to discover in all the knives out there!

Besides being expensive? Lots of cool stuff out there. If you can’t find something you like, you’re not trying very hard.

Once, I had three big hobbies that my overtime money went to. TTRPG's (D&D et al), Comic Books and Knives. I stopped collecting Comic Books because the other two were getting more expensive and the options were growing in size.

Knives became #1 because I am on a quest to buy a knife made in each of the 50 United States. Up to 15 out of 50. LOTS of wonderful options and that has slowed me down a bit. Which is a good thing.

I've never really understood the collecting thing. Not with knives or firearms. I love using steel and the feel of my shot being true. Maybe I'm a user collector?

Would love to see a thread with pics of each knife!

As far as the topic goes, I feel like there's something primal about the knife. It's one of the most basic but also precise hand tools, I'd be curious to learn maybe what anthropologists think about it.

It’s cool how knives touch every aspect of our lives.

From food harvesting, food prep, eating food.

Work knives, almost every trade from a surgeons scalpal to a stock boys box knife.

Every hobby involves at least scissors.

You use a knife while hunting or fishing. You need a knife to process the meat, you need a knife to eat the meat.

You can use a machete to clear land, a froe to process firewood.

All these uses, without even getting into tactical knife use. Knives touch every aspect of life.

Maybe I'm a user collector?

It’s a great way to be! It’s how I consider myself as well, though maybe a little heavier on the using and lighter on the collecting. If I don’t use it I eventually move it along to someone else who also may or may not use it! 🤣

Knives became #1 because I

Rolled a natural 20 on your perception check?

That’s how it happened for me anyway, kinda. I realized over a short time in my early thirties that knives were not only beautiful and fun to own but extremely useful and problem solving. That solidified them as the thing I would spend more disposable income on than just about anything else for a number of years.

There are some neat options for pretty modest sums too.

Macchina Macchina help me understand what I’m looking at in that fire pic? Which as has been stated is really awesome. But just wondering because it looks like you’ve got a bench in your fire pit??

Bwahaha! You’re spot on! I had been meaning to get rid of a bench my wife bought and assumed it was made for the outdoors (it wasn’t). I finally built a bonfire to burn it and snapped this pic before it was engulfed.

Love that Ruger! I have a few, and they are my favorite handguns, even over my P series SIGs and CZs 😁

Don’t forget watches. Quartz or automatic doesn’t matter too much. You *need* a quality reliable timepiece. As with knives, a quality watch doesn’t need to be obscenely expensive.

I'm a collector user when it comes to my hobbies. I see where you are coming from! Art, coins, stamps-those collectors are on another level. Especially when it comes to disposable income!

I started this knife journey buying knives as a user only. Didn’t keep boxes, never considered resale value etc. I bought them to use and keep forever.

Then I went to bladeshow for the first time last year and found this place and quickly went from being a user to full on collecting. Since then I’ve discovered so many different makers and companies. I’ve spent a lot of time and money the past year buying and selling. I went from maybe 20 knives to 50 quickly. And the prices per knife steadily went up.

I’ve just recently made the decision to transition back to being a user. I took stock of all that I had and realized there were more than a few that were rare gems I would never use and I had so many that some would never get pocket time.

While this place certainly enabled the growth of the collection it also helped bring me back full circle to where I am now. I’ve been able to try so many knives that I’ve found exactly what I like and don’t like which is important in deciding whats a user and what’s just place filler.

This past week I made some really tough decisions and sold some knives that I absolutely love. Some were rare that I will probably never get a chance to own again. There was a feeling of a weight lifted off my shoulders of not chasing the next drop or search for that rare piece to fill a hole in the collection. Everything I now have I consider a forever knife that I will carry and use. It’s kind of nice to no longer be concerned about a scratch or a sharpened edge.

So I would now consider myself a user/collector simply because of the number of knives I still have and because I haven’t tossed the boxes yet. I’ll still be buying but for more functional uses and designs. I feel like I found a good spot to settle in for the long ride.

Ps: Not implying that there’s anything wrong with collecting. Just finding my own comfort zone.

I was also into knives and guns. Seems very common here. Knives became #1 when I had kids because they were cheaper but that didn’t last long. I think the most expensive gun I ever bought was around $5-550ish never had anything really special. I’ve bought probably 10 knives or more in the past year in that same price range 😂.
