I think that they're great liquid assets...not investments*, but assets.
Even used, they manage to hold their value pretty decently, and the market is generally pretty quick to snatch up what you're throwing down. It's like having a bit of cash in your house, without having to have cash in your house. (*the whole "diversify your portfolio" thing, blah, blah, blah) Need some extra cash? Dump a couple that you haven't touched in a year or two.

*I reckon that, like some guns, some could even be great investments, if you had a basic knowledge of the market and were patient.
