There can be only one....

". . . maybe I should clarify the question as 'which should be my FIRST khukri?'."

Don't worry, pm. We knew that's what you REALLY meant.

And were you at all prepared for the can of worms you opened with that post?

You might want to think about the purpose to which the knife is put. If you want to fell trees, split wood, etc. you would want to pick up the big choppers (AK, GRS). If you're looking for a light brush/softwood clearing knife maybe you want to put your weight into a knife that moves fast enough to bite light vegetation instead of sweeping it out of the way (say a sirupati). If you buy an AK and are planning to use it as a medium/heavy machete you're going to have a sore arm, even if you are a big 'un.

X-Head said it all. The UBE, especially in the 20 to 22 inch range will fulfill your wildest khukuri fantasy, and work hard for you to boot.

Pmcelrath,

The 20" AK was my first Khukuri, and is the one I reach for for any heavy chopping. You can use it for limbing trees with limbs down to 1.5" to 2", but I wouldn't recommend much smaller than that, as the big khuks have a way of slicing through tree limbs/trees like they were butter, and then they continue to travel downward through anything in their path--knees, shins etc...

I am 6' and 210lbs and on the strong side, but I don't have very big hands or thick wrists. The 20" AK will tire ME out farely quick in the wrist/forearms. If you are like some of the big Yetis we have on this forum, the 20" AK will be a perfect "all around" khuk.

Besides you can always justify getting the 18" and 15" AK later---I mean what self-respecting collector would only have ONE of a set of 3 (maybe 4 if HI still makes the 12" AKs)

Good luck in your khuk quest!
