There Can Be Only One

Light Guy,
Thanks for that review. I will certainly keep that in mind about the pics. I think they can be misleading also, some certainly look small in the pics but are big, thick knives so, I am glad you told me your story. I am trying very hard not to make a bad judgement because funds are limited and can't afford a mistake. Thanks for all the input everyone.

So ...... Please help me find it. Have done quite a lot of research on the subject, but can't seem to nail it down. I want a Super Sharp Skinner however, also needs to be able to perform other duties. Light chopping, batoning if the situation called for it. Easy to sharpen would be nice. Right now I am considering the BATAC LE based on a article I read about ELK hunting. The poster, had good remarks about the BATAC/LE, as a skinner and all around camp knife. Looking at a Yard Keeper Le, from monetary standpoint. I am sure others have experience on the one, I am looking for. SO... If there could be only 1, which one would you want on your side?

SUper X,

I would advise you to not purchase a BATAC LE. Its too thick. THe original CG's are the thinnest at .187" THis is a much better thickness.

I would suggest you get a small knife and pair it with a larger one later. THis way you have a little knife for what little knives do and a big one for the rest. THis way they will excel at what they do, and not be just nominal at everything.

I would suggest a smaller knife first and that would be the choiless anorexic BS. It will do everything you need in a one knife. It wont chop much but will baton most anything you need to survive. Bigger is not always better. Actually, its a pain when you need to do caping work etc. You will not cape an elk with any batac and have it worthy of your taxidermist IMHO.

Depending on when your hunt is the cabs may not make it intime and the next best option would be a bbdc or satin Proto BS. Its thicker but still way smaller lighter and better than most anything else you could pick. Especially, if your on a guided hunt.

Good luck in your search and your hunt.

Had to come back to say that the scrapyard scrapper 5 in LE or SE with INFI blade would also be a good choice.

Personally I'd prefer a Skinny ASH or ASH LE to the BATAC. The TAC handle is :barf: or you can't go wrong with a SFNO.

SFNO:thumbup:

But I have to say, I love the feel of the Batac handle in the hand.

I really like the CG version, as I believe it is thinner than the LE version.

Would make a great skinner, but you would loose out on chopping and batoning.

Sarsquatch is probably the best value for the money right now. It is a bit bigger than the Ash1, but smaller than the NMSFNO. It can skin, food prep, bushcraft chores (although at the larger end of the scale).

I have always believed that if you are going to pick one knife, I would rather have a knife that was slightly over sized than one that is undersized.

You should also be able to get a SarQ for about 100 less than the Btac le.

Knife Hunter,
The Srapper 5 is one that I have looked at and given some thought. I will look at these other models as well that have been suggested. Thanks for all the input everyone.

THis is my favorite little Busse.

The Culti is great for detail work, but I'd recommend a SAR-4 for your Elk One-Knife - not just because of its size, heft, and handle that allows chopping, but the rounded tounge can be used as a handy flaying poll when skinning.

I vote for the Boss Jack. I would also throw in the mix (that I don't see mentioned): Hell Razor (I don't know why this one is always overlooked - it's one of my all-time favorites), choiled Tank Buster (.187"), Boss Street -or- L-CABS; maybe even a thinner Satin Jack.

I agree on the CG BATAC vs LE. Strip the CG and run with it if the blade shape suits your fancy. I shot a 35 lb. coon out of the tree I chased him up. I caught him stealing my chickens earlier this week and it did the skinning job very well. It chops decent, skins decent, batons decent and doesn't pull your pants down when you walk with it for extended periods of time.

That said, I still would pick the Skinny ASH-1 or one of the .22 show versions for my only one if I couldn't have a SAR-8, FSH, CGFBM or Basic 11 with a smaller knife like a SAR-3, BAD, CABS, or Leaner/Meaner. The Batac isn't enough lighter to justify giving up the usefulness of the thinner ASH-1's extra blade length. The following pic shows my preferred models for small and midsize that I use a lot.
A DSSF is a very cost effective alternative though, especially in today's market.

AZTimt,
Let me get this straight, that is a BATAC CG in the pics with the coon Right? It does not appear too large in the pics. I should mention I have large hands. A Rat 4 seems kinda small in the handle to me. You all have given me good information, atleast it's narrowed down to about 10 models:confused::) I guess I just liked the way the BATAC looked but some of the pics can be confusing. I like the Hog Muck also and several other's. I do appreciate all the advice given here, it's obvious, a tough choice even with experience, as everyone has a favorite.
