There can only be one!

LaRue, that's very possible. Having said that, the Nazi swastika is clockwise rather than the counterclockwise flyfot, so I'll try not to read too far into what Thamar was feeling that day :D

Jens, can you post a pic of the "Himalayan Razor," pretty please? Don't think I've seen one before.

Also, since you brought it up, if this were zombies I'd grab my Tibetan Short Sword and make due with the Micro Bowie already on my hip. Those lucky enough to own an Agni Jowla would be in even better shape for zombie fighting, at least if they were lama-zombies (that's lama the holy person not llama the furry animal).

I didn't mean it had anything to do with nazism.
I'm not enlightened on the in's and out's of Hinduism or Budism but belive it stands for something different based on the direction.

I'm quite sure it has nothing to do with Nazism, I was just kidding about that. Quite possible you're right about different meanings, or maybe it's just the opposite, that it really doesn't matter the direction? I don't know, but I would find it odd if it was actually the same both directions. Kinda like how a "b" and a "d" are the same but different directions.

Perhaps someone wiser than us can give a better explanation.

Either one of these. Sufficient teeth for two legged or four legged dangers.

Def. not ideal for cooking, preparing meals, and other menial survival tasks but I think it would be easier to scavenge a smaller knife along the way than a HI khukuri or TFW barong.

My 17.5in 23oz Thamar Dui Chirra is probably the one I would grab. Its light weight but built hella tough. I love everything about it. Its traditional shape, razor edge, balance, sheath fit... everything it perfect on this one!

Yes no problem. I added 2 more cool blades to the picture.

  • ASTK
  • Himalayan Razor aka Sher Attitude
  • JW Bensinger's version of the Fairbairn Cobra

Would probably pick my 16.5" WWII, if I had to pick a HI.

Since I design knives now, I might pick one of mine instead, but there's no wrong answer here. Hell, if I'm fighting in the house, I might grab my HI sword. I think it's one of a kind...

HI blades. So many to chose from.
If it's just Zombies then my Himalayan Razor.
But since it's most likely to see more work than undead I would rely on my usual goto blade, the ASTK, a real workhorse.
I'm roughly on the same train of thought as you. Yes, way too many choices to choose from. Also, the ASTK doesn't seem to get much press at all, they are a wonderful Khukri. I'm a relative neewbie, perhaps they were a fair haired child of another Era. The Manakamana is another I believe falls into the same category. I have no idea which I'd choose but I know the longer version of the Gelbu Special would be in my group of first picks.

Ohh that's a Himalayan Razor! I EMd for one on a DOTD but was too slow. I knew it as a Sher Attitude. It's kinda like a longer YCS Karda with a Hasiya style handle. Very cool. Gotta be around 16" OAL right? What's the weight on that one?

That JW Fairbain is drop dead gorgeous. I'm gonna get one of his blades this year I think. Heck, he's only a few hours drive from me

Spectre, can we see that sword?

Yeah, SG, I'll have to take a pic. Might be tomorrow before I get around to it.

Imagine it's a tarwar's tough uncle, on steroids. I'll try to remember to take a pic.

Close. It's just a little bit under 18.5 inch at 25oz. While the ASTK has 33oz.

JW knows his stuff. His Cobra is balanced only slightly in front of the guard as one would suspect of a fighter. Still its doing quite well when chopping. Other similar balanced knives which I own don't. Maybe it's the forward curve or some secret.

Dui Chirra is 17" 26oz according to the DOD post, Foxy Folly was bought sight-unseen through Auntie, and she told me this one was 16.5" 24oz with wood handle. I passed up an 18" 25oz FF with horn handle because I wasn't sure if it would feel too long for or not. Now I know it wouldn't have, but I still preferred the wood handle to the horn.

Jens, I based my guess off the ASTK, but assumed an OAL more like 15". Guess all those knives were about an inch or two bigger than I thought. That happens a lot with HI. As for the JW piece, I'd chock up it's chopping power to either some secret or good old fashioned magic. Couldn't be the curve or anyone could do it :D

17-18" OAL / Mid-20's Oz'r is about what I'm looking for - ofcourse, this could be totally off base once I get one in my hand...

;)

Is that a Dui Chirra on the top? Can you give stats if possible? :)

That's gotta be another DC. You can see the trident style cho, that's as unique to Thamar as his markings :)

ChainWhip, both of my blades fit those specs, and I'm sure you'll like something similar. Regardless of the model, 16-18" and somewhere in the mid-20oz range is great for a general purpose blade. Heavy enough to handle decent chopping, light enough to use all day.

If we're talking utility, a 15" M43 would be my pick. If we're talking about battling through hordes, we'll that's why the Falcata was designed;)
