THERE is NOT an answer for EVERYTHING!

"the books" say that water freezes at 32°F. If someone writes that they put water into a container at 40°, and got it to freeze, what do you conclude?

I would conclude that either 1) it wasn't at normal pressure, or 2) the guy was a goofball. Ahem.

Seriously man, what the hell are you talking about. Fundamentally I agree with your main point, and I know we're supposed to play nice around here, but Jesus Harold Christ on rubber crutches, are you high?

I am sorry i was trying to simplify it. Let me try again scientificly a helicopter should not have lift. Maybe that helps. do some research before you start calling me a lunny :-)

Maybe it wasn't even water to begin with  Or the temperature reading wasn't accurate.

Not as much as i would like to be. :-)

If you want to be more religious, uh..., what is stopping you? It's not like you have to wait to buy or pay for something, hopefully...?

Yes i agree with what you say and thankyou :-)

hey chad2 did you re etch that piece of alabama yet? Heres a piece after just a couple dips and sands, i think your friend would appreciate you going above and beyond, and bringing bring him the best out of that damascus. pm me if you want some info on my mixes, etc. Greg

Aaahhh! No i did not i already sent it out but he is happy with it so i am happy but i will pm you so that next time i can get more out of my etch thanks man.

Another Internet reference....

By the way, have you ever visited SNOPES.COM? A lot of what you find on the Internet is pure bunk. You know that... right?

I also love that most of your posts are not even on the main subject lol. beading around the bush does not make you smart

Me thinks your goal is to make 1,000 post within six months time, you are not a rare bird around these parts. We've seen them come and go.
Make a hundred knives then stop by and give us your qualified opinion.

Chad, just a question. Have you tested a blade heat treated using your methods. Preferably using the same damascus. By this I mean to destruction. I agree with Ed. If you are going to make the best knife possible, test them to make sure. Everyone has their own methods and it is not up to me to say they are right or wrong. By the way helicopters are well thought out machines governed by aerodynamics, no one ever said they are not supposed to fly, that is a bumblebee.

Brion, that's an old wives' tale. A good engineer can tell you exactly how a bumblebee can fly. And yes, a helicopter too.

Chad,

I hear what you are saying.

Now what you need to do is heat treat a blade of the same steel the way the "Lab Geeks" describe and test both blades exactly the same.

Then you will know if what you did to one is better then what you did to the other.

A lot of guys will rant and rave as to why what someone does is not "The proper way or best way" but usually do no have enough proof to back up their claims as well. They are all about the facts until asked to provide them themselves.

So you need to test it for yourself and see if you are actually achieving what you think you are. Sure the procedure you did might have produced a great knife, but until you do it the standard method you really have nothing to compare it too.

Samael in Shoptalk? When did they let you out of the Cove? :) JK good to see you posting here too.

Omg how did you know! Are you like a mind reader or something. Off subject again

I have tested it on 5160 and i got more card board cuts, finer edge, and 10 degrees more lateral flex untill break but this was also only done on two blades no more not a lot of money:-)

Look guys just because you do not think something works because the lab geeks can not figure out why it works, does not mean it does not work! For example my job! I am an electrician, electricity is a theory we still do not know exactly how it works but we know it works. Just because these lab geeks can not find out how fowlers heat treat works does not mean it doesnt do amazing things to the steel. So lets stop talking about how austenite transfer happens at -90 degrees and only in a milli second because there are many things that we can not explain exactly but we can give a cause and affect to a process. Lets stop citing books of info and start giving more info to those book writers. Start testing fowlers process compared to yours and let me know if your process is better. Dont tell me i am wrong because a book says its wrong. Because yet another example of my job i work on H60 sea hawks which is a helicopter and scientificly a helicopter should not fly so try and tell me that it does not fly because those lab geeks say it cant fly. Start contributing to more information instead of breaking down people who are trying to contribute. if everyone was like 30% of the ppl on this forum, we would have no information for those 30% to read and quote all day long.

Why is it that when people have info backing them they will post for days but when they are proven wrong they stop posting or dont post at all. I knew i would not get a lot of posts on this lol.

Everyone who is proven wrong stops posting?
I think you have a different internet than I do. :D

There is nothing wrong with that, where these ppl are going wrong is by saying that i am wrong and they are right i would love to here how they do it but dont tell me that they think i am wasting my time. Just say hey i have tried that and have found that i get better results by doing it like this, and i would say i will try that thank you. :-)

You know, the first posts of yours I read were all about some maker (I didn't recognize his name) was god, everything he said was gold and you were MAD about being called wrong.
It turns out that his methods were not perfect.

Now you are in love with Ed Fowler and ticked about being called wrong again.

(all I will say about EF is that I can't trust a man who endorses a heat treat oven in advertizing, but uses a torch and eyeballs temps.)

"these ppl are going wrong is by saying that i am wrong and they are right"
Again I still don't know who these people are...

Have you considered that ALL of you ARE wrong.

Maybe it's true, maybe not,

But if you get so mad at being called wrong over the internet, get some help before you stroke out or something.

The science of metallurgy has been going on for a LONG time now.
I think I can trust at least some of the info and don't have to recreate the science on my own.

Repeatable results come from repeatable conditions.
temperature control being a very important variable.

I believe that you said you did have a heat treat oven.
If you do, then why go backwards to a torch heat?

Chad a discussion like this caused a lot of trouble on the forums a while back as it was just getting things stirred up. Id recommend just letting this one go or taking it to private PMs for sake of the froum community.

When did knifemakers become so whiny/preachy? Why can't eveyone just do they're own thing and have fun and make some money if you are inclined to?
