There's a bad moon on the rise

I hope so. I just bought snow tires for my car and I'm itching to try it. I didn't notice the ring last night though, it was cloudy where I was at, which was camping!

well, we got a little bit of snow here today in VA and its pretty early for it too... it has been 5 days between the moon halo sighting and the weather it "forecasted". also as i recall it was near 60 degrees one day between then and now. should i just call this chance? a coincidence? or pay much more attention to this weather signal? i can certainly see how it could pertain to survival if you need to add more weather fortification to a survival shelter or know to stay put rather than moving along.

This is a topic near and dear to my heart. YES, you should always keep an eye on the clouds and the wind. They tell you a lot.

Regarding the ring around the moon (a classic altostratus cloud; actually, if you can measure the distance of the ring from the moon in degrees and do a little bit of math, you can compute your latitude!)... the ring is (as just about everyone said) caused by thin ice crystals that refract moonlight. That predicts the weather for the next 12-18 hours.

The Bad News: It did not, and never well, foretell a warming trend after that followed by cold, snowy weather. Clouds and winds are good for only half-day to almost-full day announcements, but short of a hurricane, can't tell you the weather for 2 days+.

The Good News: There were warning signs that would have predicted that the day *after* you saw the ring. For example, you likely would have seen a shift in wind patterns from the southwest that would have picked up the temperature a little bit, followed by a gradual shift from the South that would have picked up moisture from the Gulf, chilled it aloft, and then delivered that as a little bit of snow to your area. The clouds would have been announcing that the day before. Cirrus clouds smearing from fairly straight lines to feathery, wide shapes would have been just such a clue that winds aloft were changing direction, and they would have been announcing it many, many hours before other, snowy clouds appeared.

Edit: I think I confused myself. Short answer: a single weather phenomenon rarely gives you accurate information beyond the next 12-18 hours. But these are followed by another sign that gives you another 12 hours...then another, then another.
