There's no such thing as Filipino Stickfighting!

I'll be brief. Since interacting with the members of this forum, I've thought about my training both past and present and my opinions on Prof. Remy Presas and perhaps P. Greg Alland.

I will still look at the concepts, evaluate the methods, and keep an open mind.

Thanks for the clarification, Donna. I should have been more explicit about the reasons for my suspicions. Trial By Internet, and all that. *laugh*

Cheerfully,

Razor

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

I will add (to my previous comments) that if I were going into a fight, knowing it was going to be "for keeps", and had the option, I would definitely choose sword over a stick ... for obvious reasons.

Btw, I had my first chance to handle an authentic filipino sword over the weekend. It belongs to a friend of mine (a forum member) who dropped by our class for a work out on saturday. It was beautiful and seemed to have a spirit that spoke to me. As I took it through our cutting & thrusting system, I kept thinking "Oh man, I love it ... I want one ... No, I want TWO!".

If you're reading this Army, THANKS AGAIN!

Mas Guru: It is only now I come to read the thread again after 4 days vacation.

Thanks for your explanation, analyzing your post's we are on the same boat of understanding what is Stick Fighting is all about.

I just want to add that you speak correctly in saying that "Arnis, Kali, Eskrima, "They are all the same", about it's philosophy in stick fighting.

I just want to say also, that thank you for clarifying to me that Martial Arts and Combat on your understanding is an art of killing or it is a Military arts. In my comments I did just prove that there is already a stick fighting long time ago in the Phils before the coming of any western civilization.

Yes I agree with you, anyone opt for the blade for real defense if life is at stake, but the Arnis can kill someone if it is the only available staff to use on a particular situation.

Of being taught in the Military, the Arnis is just helpful for the Crack Batalion especially on Rally Dispersal, and Remy taught it in the Phil Military for that purpose also.

Thanks to someone like you giving good explanation about stick fighting.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SPAIN!

This is a myth propagated by James Keating (LessGuru) when he Knows that the swinglow illuminati illusrtrissimo forte style of triple muslim scimitar developed opera and chiaroscuro in the never conquered cultural mecca of in the hills of the southern philli islands, a beacon of light and culture upon the world which due to the opressive colonial powers (The fools!)had to be cloaked where one would least expect it; inaccessible hillside countryside teeming with headhunters! but my guru, Muad'Dib has traced the true Silat/Kali/Tae-bo (hidden in Borneo, after Atlantis sunk) and we are now ,Oh Glorious Fremen Jihad! Ready to implement phase five. . .

OOps sorry, must have been smoking stuff I can't spell again. Or maybe I od'd on the unnecessary baiting and sillyness of this thread.

Now let me see if I got this straight:

The armed forces of the Phillipines prefer knives to sticks(and presumably rifles and tanks to knives)

There was an influx of Indonesians to the southern muslim-friendly islands but they came from Malaysia, rather than west Java so their Silat was different than what is more popularly taught today (Don't tell this to Burt Richardson,he practises Malaysia style Silat and it might hurt his feelings not to have known how esoteric it all was) which turned to true Kali.

The late master Leo G rediscovered all this in his research.

Gregg Allend is a hellova teacher and his students really like him.

Sounds good to me.

What's hard to understand is the super confrontational style here from all sides, I mean if you really possess "The Truth" Why not simply laugh at the poor benighted souls who don't get it rather than slam them?

Are they a source of national shame? Does anyone NEED converts? It's a free country.
Ever hear of the saying "live and let live?"

Ponder it.

As long as you realize, of course, that my teacher can beat uo your teacher

Dave, what was the type of sword you played with?

Smoke,

Army told me the name but I can't remember what it was.

The blade was probably 20-24 inches long, with moderate belly and tapered to a very sharp point. It had top & bottom guards, possibly of brass and the handle looked like carved bone. The punyo had an animal's face w/open mouth carved in it. Scabbard was two pieces of wood some sort of leather held together by straps that again looked like brass.

Sorry my description is somewhat lacking, but I was too busy playing with it to really examine it closely.

J-Ringo: Don't compare the stick to the knives, nor the rifles and Tanks to the knives. We are here only to talks purely of several kinds of martial arts forms.

If I may say also, all martial arts are useless and nothing if I shoot an attacker with my .45 then I have no place to talk things about martial arts here. Sometimes, what we uttered reflects who we are.

Also, if I say all kinds of barehands martial arts is useless if I used my sword. And that is true, only in the movie a barehand self defense can overcome a sword man.

Even me not only in this keyboard, any barehands martial practioner if I hold a big knife, a sword of any kind or a bolo, I doubt if the experts can easily subdue me.

We are talking history here, comparison of the different martial arts or self defense art whatever the name of it to learn from everyone. If we talk guns, rifles, tanks, then this is not the proper palce to speak of those other forms of arms for self defense. I may opt for the nuclear weapon to end every form of weapons.

Thanks

Am I coming up against a language barrier or an I.Q. Barrier?

"I had hoped to be amusing, have I failed?"

Tyrone Power to Basil Rathbone in The Mark Of Zorro.

You guys really want want to keep on fighting with each other, rather than learning from each other?

*double sigh*

Everyone's scholarship seems to be wee bit biased and inflammatory,

Never realized I seemed to be advocating a discussion of neutron bombs--in fact my intent was to defuse the bombs around here.

*triple sigh*

I give up.

Dave, sounds like a type of bolo.

J_Ringo, I was laughing believe me.

Okay, I have a problem with the whole Kalis/Kalibunton idea. What area did this blade come from?

I doubt it's from Mindanao because their main weapon tree doesn't have it. That Moroland plaque we all have (which is for tourists and has been for years) has been altered through the centuries and is inaccurate. The actual original plaques look way different and are of better craftsmanship.

Dear JOEL: Thanks for catching me on that one!
Glad master G is alive and well, I offer no excuse as to my faux pas,(that's a variation of the Crossada) except that I wasn't quite sure if I was quite alive myself after slugging through some of the posts.

Poor Donna!

Best always,
JR.
