there's something I can't quite put my finger on...

I definitely have more CRK's than Hinderers too, but love them both. I just see them as having a different purpose. If I want a gentleperson's knife, a piece of functional art, CRK all the way. If I want something I can beat the crap out of and abuse if necessary, I put a Hinderer in my pocket. When I was deployed I carried a Hinderer in my back pocket where I could get to it quickly, and a CRK in my front pocket.

I know exactly what you mean. I feel the same way about my Emersons.

If I had one knife it would be a Sebenza. I seriously dig my Hinderers. Hinderers are likely tougher and are definitely more tactile and thus potentially tactical. But nothing "does it" for me more than a plain 21 (Large or Small depending on my day). I dig the design aesthetics, the feel, the pocket worn look the handle gets after time, the clip is perfectly designed and placed, the design and quality of the screws/posts/spacers is unsurpassed. The CRK is, IMO, a more tasteful knife. The machining and overall fit and finish is clearly better on the CRK. My XMs and 21s probably get equal pocket time. Sometimes I err on the side of caution, sometimes I want pure functional elegance.

There is only one of your UG and plenty of Hinderers. You will be able to make that trade(IMO) in the future if you decide to. You also may land up with both-life is fluid. I like the Hinderer's very much, but the Sebenza is a more practical knife for everyday use(guess that depends on your use) IMO.
I see you worked something out with LW. -nothing like handling to let you know what a knife is like.

FreakinAwesom! A knife with history. I will take care of it and make sure it gets back to you in one piece.

I love knives with history. I still have the knives I used to deploy with. Unfortunately, they were all cheapos. Except for the Buck 110 that was my constant companion for 10 years in the military. It has my initials engraved in the bolster.

It saw a lot of legitimate hard use in many countries throughout Asia and Europe that many "I use ALL my knives" posers couldn't even fathom. It now belongs to my oldest son, and it rides with him in his truck.

It doesn't have quite the history that some do, but it's definitely got a few tales to tell. I'd gotten out of the military and was a contractor when I got that one, so that deployment was as a contractor. It was also my last. I had a spanto that I'd used on previous deployments, but when I get that particular slicer it kicked the spanto out of my pocket because it's SO smooth. All my knives had easier deployments than some, I was just a REMF admin weenie. They still got some use, though!

Nice, slicer grind. Doesn't look any worse for the wear after being on deployment. Should make for a good comparison.

The first 2 pics were taken before, only the bottom was taken during. You can definitely see wear, especially on the scale. It doesn't look bad, just the G10 isn't as crisp as a new one. The TI and blade show signs of use, but very little in relation to the actual amount of use. The edge does need touching up, and I'll clean the knife before I send it off.

What an awesome thread.

This is why I love the CRK forum.

I also wish I knew about CRK before my time in the Middle East.

I'm not military. Just a contractor.

I carried a leatherman which got confiscated at Heathrow.

Great act of generosity, LW!

I tried my best to like the XM-18s and kept mine for awhile, but in the end I felt like I got a lot more from CRK for the money, not to mention a CRK cuts much better. I was hesitant for a long time to get rid of mine because they were straight from the Ranch and I'd never pay the exorbitant secondary market costs for one, but now they're a dime a dozen and can always get another if I choose. I've tried my best to like the other 2 out of the "Big 3" brands, but in the end there's really only one I care for.

Amen to that!

This is a great way to get the CRK back after do doing out the grass may not be greener after all.
Yep and I forgot to mention that I'm glad that OP is getting a trial run with the XM. I'd hate for him to trade off a gem like that only to find out a few days/weeks later that he regretted it. At least he will get to see what it's all about which I think most all of us goes through in this hobby.

Yea it's a good thing. I really just want to see and experience a Hinderer so I can see what all the fuss is about.

At the height of Hinderer mania I had my hopes built so high, like massively high for the $800ish they were going for I was bound to be disappointed.

I made this pic below and got eviserated on the forums for it.

I just couldn't accept it at that price point. I also got a hyped up SnG Z-Wear straight from TNK with lock stick, poorly centered blade and an action that felt like a drunk Boy Scout used it to dig a lutrine pit and the warranty returned it as working as intended.

I felt at that moment CRK was my deal 100%

This is not a Hinderer bash as I think they're well made, but this is what I got with my first one which is unacceptable at this price point. I was told to accept them as character marks. No thanks. I see on the new ones they're using a pattern now to cover this area up.

CRK for me at this price point all the way.

I will mention when I had all my hinderer's, they were when they were near impossible to get and were from $500-$1000+ NOT the $425 you can get them for now from dealers. I had all 3 sizes. The only one I have left is the cheapest one I ever was able to get at the bargain price of $500 and has scratches on the pivot from someone slipping with a tool during disassembly.

Yeah. Keep the UG. Hinderers are available readily now. That specific Sebenza is not. Buying an XM for a decent price is realistic and will cost you less than the UG Sebbie. For the record, I like Hinderers way more than CRKs, I'm just logical.

Fresh pics taken after I cleaned it for it's journey...

A few things about this knife;

It's an early Gen 4, one of the last with a sterile blade. This one has no bladesteel mark, which means it's Duratech 20CV. I have blue standoffs, body and pivot screws on it. The anodization on the screws is quite worn from all the carry and use. It's wearing a Steel Flame crossnut, but I did put the stock clip back on so you wouldn't feel conspicuous, and afraid to carry the knife. I also saw how filthy the lanyard had gotten, and tossed it in the trash. :o

A few things I ask;

Don't be afraid to carry and use the knife. Short of prying doors off armored vehicles, you're not going to hurt it!
Feel free to touch up the edge or strop it all you like, it could use it. Just nothing drastic like reprofiling, please.
I have the clip mounted for tip-up carry, feel free to reverse it to tip-down or leave it, whichever you like.
Feel free to adjust the pivot tighter or looser to see what you like. This one has a lighter detent common in knives from that time. Newer ones have a heavier detent. The blade is off-center, favors the presentation side. I could fix it, but never bothered since it's a user. Don't let it worry you, it doesn't hurt a thing.
Don't rush to get it back to me, take time to get to know it well. Your Sebenza will be keeping P68 company in me safe, so you don't have to worry about it. Although I do intend to take a few pics of the little pretty! :D

Enjoy it!!!

Cool, I should be getting to the post office sometime tomorrow, while I'm out and about.
