So you say the this http://www.polarmax.com/products/details/2B11A/ may be a bit too heavy and that this http://www.rei.com/product/795037 may be a better choice?

polarmax linked is 5.5 oz/yard

power dry is ~ 3.5- 7+ oz/yard, quite a range- the REI one doesn't list the weight of the fabric

my R1 power dry is on the heavier end of the scale @ 6.8, Capilene 1 on the other hand ~ 3.5 oz

I like a very thin layer for a base layer, and then a little heavier for a mid layer- the R1 works great as a mid layer- transfers moisture well and dries quickly, it would be too heavy imo for a base layer though
