thermo couple question

I am building a new forge with a pyrometer, and have a 12" thermocouple. Do I need that entire length in the forge or can I bend it and just have a potion of it in there?
Where does it read the temp from, the tip or the whole length?

TC's read from the tip. You only need an inch or so in the heat. I like mine about 1-2 inches inside to get away from the wall heat.

I have 17" long kiln, I like to read the center temp in case of the not even heat. The 12" TC goes in about 7.5" inside...
