I've asked this question before... and I got an obvious answer. Put it where your work is. Well... I was putting my wool and refractory in last night and I realized that my burner is aimed precisely where the tip of my thermocouple is. Am I gonna melt that sucker? It's an older analog device and the pyrometer has an upper reading of 2500. But even if it can handle that hot spot, should I move it forward? Right now I'm going with Reil and Zoeller's method of not angling the burner for the vortex since it will be a venturi side arm deal and flat work space.

Thanks for any suggestions!

It's definitely not going to give you a reliable temperature of the chamber, and it could fail quickly.

That's what I was thinking so I drilled a couple more holes and made some plugs. I guess it will be a good experiment to move the thermocouple around and see how temps vary.
