thermocouple in forge

I'm putting together my little MAPP forge made from a Christmas cookie can.... about 2 gallons or so in volume and will be lined with kaowool and satanite... you know... the typical set up.

So.... I have a thermocouple and analog pyrometer from an old ceramics kiln that reads up to 2500. I have no idea how accurate it is (any suggestions on calibrating these things???). But... what would be the best way to put this into my can forge? Should I just make a little port for it and stick in the side???

Calibrate it by having someone with an accurate one place it side by side with yours in their forge or Kiln...
I use "Witness Cones" from a Ceramics supplier to double check my temps.

a real easy way is to stick it in boiling water and see what it reads. then look up what temp water boils at your elevation and see if the numbers match.

So what is the best way to include my thermocouple/pyrometer in a 550 cubic/inch can forge? Where is the best place to position it? Is there anything to consider in terms of how to make the port for it... or how far to put the sensor into the forge??? How far from the burner???
